SFU launched the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) initiative in early 2018. The initiative's work was guided by input from the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Advisory Group, which was chaired by Kim Hart.

Advisory Group Terms of Reference
The role of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group was to provide input and advice to the Provost’s Special Advisor on Equity and Diversity about the process and substance of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion initiative, including:
1. The consultation with the university community about equity, diversity and inclusion including the proposed timing, format(s), and process;
2. The communications related to the consultation, including timing and content;
3. The collection of data and information from the university community, including the proposed process, format(s), timing and communications plan for:
A. collecting demographic and other information from faculty, staff and students through a survey or other means;
B. collecting input from community members about gaps and barriers in SFU’s current structure, practices, and policies;
C. collecting input from community members about actions SFU could take to reduce or eliminate barriers and to ensure all of its members are respected, supported and included; and
D. collecting information about existing equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives at SFU, including building and publishing an inventory of existing committees, resources, initiatives, and experts.
4. The process for identifying themes and priorities and for formulating recommendations in the Special Advisor’s Report to the Provost on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
5. The metrics for measuring change.
