(For research carried out at Simon Fraser University)

Jefferson Chan received his BSc in chemistry in 2006 from the University of British Columbia while working as an undergraduate researcher in David M. Perrin’s laboratory. Shortly after, Chan began his doctoral studies with  Andrew J. Bennet at Simon Fraser University where his thesis research included the mechanistic elucidation hydrolysis reactions catalyzed by viral and bacterial neuraminidases and the development and application of a NMR-based technique to measure competitive kinetic isotope effects. In recognition of this work, he was awarded the Barbara Ferrier Chemistry Research Award, Varian Canada Inc. Award, Bruker Prize in Chemical Spectroscopy and the SFU Dean of Graduate Studies C Convocation Medal. After completing his PhD in 2011, Chan joined  Christopher J. Chang’s research group at University of California at Berkeley as a human frontier science program postdoctoral fellow where his current research efforts are aimed towards building a toolbox of fluorescent copper sensors to study the role of biological copper.
