What is the APF Canada Award and Student Outreach Program?

Hoping to gain more exposures in Asia? Here is a perfect award program that not only funds your journey but also inspires you to connect with Asia as an ambassador of Canada to build 'Asia competencies'(the knowledge, skills, and experiences one needs to be effective in engaging in Asia and with Asian counterparts)

The Asía Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is committed to expanding the Asia-related skills and knowledge of young Canadians. It is now initiating a two-pronged program that includes

a) awards up to $5000 each to support undergraduate student participation in co-ops in Asia; and

b) local (Vancouver-based) programming that stimulates students' interest in Asia and develops their skills in communicating the importance of Asia to Canada's future. 

This program hopes to encourage young canadians to gain direct exposure in Asia and to take an active interest in Canada-Asia relationship through local initiatives and opportunities. 

Who Is Eligible?

  • Canadian citizen (permanent residents and international students are not eligible)
  • Must be accepted for a Co-op program in Asia (Eligible countries and territories includes:  Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, East Timor, Hong Kong SAR, lndia, lndonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao SAR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myânmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.)
  • Programs must be a minimum of 14 weeks in duration. 
  • Students must be in good academic standing
  • Preference will be given to students who are participating in longer programs of 6-12 months and those placed with Non profit, nongovernment organizations, or Canadian embassies or consulates.

Applicant Responsibilities

  • Prior to departure for Asia: Students must attend at least one APF Canada youth outreach event to broaden their awareness of Asia or build the skills that will help them be effective communicators about Asia.
  • While in Asia and after returning to Canada: Students must complete a minimum of two outreach activities or other outputs, such as blogs or videos that can be made publicly available, or speaking engagements on campus, at local high schools, or with organizations in their communities such as campus-based student groups.
  • Students will be responsible for obtaining necessary visa/work permit or other documentation prior to travelling.
