About SFU Hockey
The SFU Women’s Hockey Club is a developing program whose objective is to support, promote, and advance the sport of ice hockey within both the university and surrounding community. The club is based near one of the newest campuses at SFU in Surrey, British Columbia. SFU Hockey is progressing to become a competitive program in its inaugural season, and is striving to develop elite athletes in hopes of setting grounds for intercollegiate hockey opportunities for women in British Columbia.
The SFU Women’s Hockey Club is considered as a club and not a varsity team, so we only receive extremely limited funding from the school. Yearly funds cover the costs of ice times, league fees, and referees. The club competes in the South Coast Female Hockey League based out of Lower Mainland, British Columbia. Individual athletes currently cover all their own league fees and traveling costs. We operate with a limited budget, and with sponsor and donor contributions, the financial burden on the players (i.e. students) have been minimized. As a club, we are a student run organization, which is self-administered by student executives in addition to their studies and training. The coaching staff also realize the potential for the team and have voluntarily provided their services utilizing their knowledge and experience to develop a long-lasting competitive athletic program.
