Primary focus: theoretical phonology and its intersections with theories of cognitive processes; computational language learning using the macrostructure of Optimality Theory and the microstructure of artificial neural networks; phonological and morphological naturalness.

Secondary areas: linguistic typology and how it informs phonological theory; detailed investigations of particular languages, including Arabic, Japanese, Hawaiian, Samoan, and Tahltan (Northern Athabaskan); process morphology, reduplication, dissimilation and root cooccurrence patterns, lexical stress and pitch accent systems; preparation of high quality linguistic datasets
