Re: Integration of GIS into disaster plan

Hello Chris. The University of Utah is working towards this. We are
mapping emergency equipment, hazardous materials and planning to move
into more non-traditional resource items, such as locations of
bottled water dispensers, first aid kits, and other misc.
supplies, etc. It's more difficult (with those supply items) as they
have a greater likelihood of not remaining in the same place, but we
believe it is better than nothing.

Early on we included a "layer" for the geological hazards impacting
our facilities, so that we may anticipate what facilities would
sustain the most significant damage, so as NOT to anticipate any post
event use for that facility. Of course, we will still conduct hazard
assessments, but there are some facilities, due to their very close
proximity to a major fault line, we are not working into our response
and recovery plans at this time. This information was most helpful
with our mitigation strategy. We not review this type of information
whenever we remodel or construct new facilities.

Ms.
