Care of Ill or Injured Staff/Students?

We have had a couple of incidents that have prompted us to look at our
procedures for the non-seriously injured/ill employees or students.

We have an excellent program with our Student Emergency Response Team as
first response to medical emergencies. They have recently implemented an
AED program. Our Campus Police (not security) also respond. The
municipality operates a tiered medical system with fire department
responding to unconscious, chest pains, shortness of breath, vital signs
absent as well as an ambulance and paramedic ambulance.

Our Staff and Student Health also offer an excellent program that deals
with non-emergent situations in their offices.

However, there is a grey area where someone is injured or becomes ill on
Campus but doesn't need/want an ambulance or emergency treatment. For
staffing and liability reasons, our Campus Police do not transport. We
have an active First Aider program and these people quite often render
assistance. If the person refuses an ambulance yet is in need of some
level of assistance, what protocols do you use? We are especially
concerned about the possibility of patient denial or under-reacting to
symptoms. Our initial discussions have produced concerns about what is
reasonable care, liability potential, and risks of transport by company or
personal vehicle.

Do any organizations have policies, procedures or programs they are willing
to share?

Thanks,
Dave.
