In 2013, breast cancer continues to be the most common cancer diagnosis in Canadian women over the age of 20 – with 1 in 4 cancer diagnoses being breast cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Canadian women, after lung cancer.
The use of alcohol is clearly linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The risk increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. Women who have 2 to 5 drinks daily have about 1½ times the risk of women who don’t drink alcohol. Excessive alcohol consumption is also known to increase the risk of developing several other types of cancer.
In 2011, 14.4% of Canadians aged 15 years and older exceeded the recommended quantity of alcohol outlined in guideline 1 for chronic risk and 10.1% exceeded the recommended quantity of alcohol outlined in guideline 2 for acute risk.
Fight for your body. Don't risk it. Say no to alcohol.
