Greetings!

Thank you for your interest in serving as a Roundtable Discussant at the Canadian Committee for Graduate Students of Education (CCGSE) upcoming meetings at the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) 2009 conference to be held at Carleton University, Ottawa, from Saturday May 23 to Tuesday May 26.

ALL ROUNDTABLE SESSIONS HAVE NOW BEEN ASSIGNED A DISCUSSANT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST.

As you may be aware, the CCGSE Roundtable session represents one of the most important mentoring opportunities available to graduate students attending the CSSE conference, for it provides them a small group atmosphere in which to discuss their research with fellow student and faculty discussants who are in a position to provide detailed feedback, and then engage in discussion.

This year's CCGSE Roundtable session will take place on Sunday morning, May 24, from 8:30 - 9:45 AM. No other Associations/SIGs will be scheduled into this time slot (meaning there is no possibility of scheduling conflicts). Poster sessions for CSSE will be taking place during this time as well, in a space physically adjacent to the CCGSE Roundtables.

As an added bonus, the CSSE Carleton 2009 Organizing Committee has arranged for a complimentary breakfast and coffee service which will be available starting at 7:30 AM, in a space physically adjacent to the CCGSE Roundtables.

Information regarding the Roundtable session (these are the instructions that were provided to the student with their acceptance letter):

A Roundtable is a chance for a graduate student to present their work (in the form of a paper) in a small intimate format – around a small roundtable in fact. A prepared response by an assigned Discussant will follow, and then a chance to engage in a conversation on the topics raised in the hope that it will aid in the student's further development of their paper/topic/research.

It is recommended to the student that they be prepared to present for 15-20 minutes – this is equivalent to 5 double-spaced typed pages – this means they will NOT be presenting their entire paper – but more a short synopsis.

The Discussant will then read a short prepared response to the student's entire paper (which they will receive from the student by April 15th) and then they lead a discussion for about 15 minutes.

Here is what a normal CCGSE Roundtable looks like:

Table 1 – the two papers to be presented are thematically linked, which means everyone around the table will have a common interest

Session Paper A (35 min)

Presenter A (15 min – 5 double-spaced pages)
Discussant A and group discussion (~15 min – 4 double-spaced pages)

Session Paper B (35 min)

Presenter B (15 min – 5 double-spaced pages)
Discussant B and group discussion (~15 min – 4 double-spaced pages)

Please note that NO TECHNOLOGY WILL BE PROVIDED AND/OR SUPPORTED during the Roundtables. It is strongly suggested to both students and discussants that they not use technology during their session.
