Research Domains

My research interests concentrate on the operation of innovation systems and can be understood as fitting within three domains. These are broadly the governance of innovation systems, the geographic and industrial structure of systems and the business forces (organisations, their strategies and the business environment) which are creating the global configuration of innovation systems.

A key underlying interest within most of my work is the nature (i.e. role, scale, structure and evolution) of interdependencies. While the term networks can mean a wide range of phenomena from social acquaintances through to mutually dependent organizational relationships, interdependencies tends mean more of the latter and is often used in regard to organizational and inter-organisational work flows. In my work I am interested in both formal organisational networks (see my work on evaluating networks) as well as working towards an understanding of economy wide production systems or econscape networks.

Together with these three domains I have develop pages which describe the two bridges that link all of my work together. The first is a concern for sustainable economic and social development and the second is my interest in networks and interdependencies.
