Nomadina sp. 1 'DARK' CAMERICA ? CAPSULE Petiole smooth above, no medial groove. Body 10mm. Wing 10mm. Head without neck (when viewed from above). Thorax, head deep chestnut brown, (antennae tan, first 2-3 segments of flagellum darker). This specimen differs little from the holotype of N. smithii. One difference is the first flagellomere is slightly narrowed basally in smithii while it is cylindrical in the Panama specimen. Another is there are two closed submarginal cells in smithii, only one in all other Nomadina observed: this may be a specimen difference, as may be the darker color of the Panama specimen. Labidogonalos ornata (Smith 1860) CAMERICA thin SLIGHTLY BULGING SMOOTH AREA BETWEEN ANTENNAE Holotype has clypeus completely yellow, as does another [UCD] male spm from Mexico. Male with metasoma straight up from Omilteme, Guerrero [BMNH] has 'normal' clypeus split by dark markings. In some specimens the yellow 'V' behind the ocelli is unbroken to the frons, in other specimens (even same collection), the 'V' is cut off by dark brown. Female from Costa Rica [Utah coll] 19-20 Dec 1987; is similar to holotype except holotype has yellow clypeus, sides of mandibles yellow; and is slightly more faded- color transition is less distinct. paraphrase from orig. description: the head large, wider than thorax, margins rounded, somewhat flattenned in front; clypeus transverse... 4 middle joints of the antennae of a suphur-yellow.... minute black, or rather fuscous spot between the antennae, a circular broad ring above them extending to the first ocellus and uniting with a subtriangular spot enclosing the posterior ocelli, on each side of which is another curved fuscous stripe, which becmes narrower and unites at the margin of the vertex. The thorax and legs are yellow; the former has three broad longitudinal stripes on the mesothorax, another on the scutellum and metathorax in the middle, and also a small triangular spot in each side of the scutellum, dark fuscous; the wings hyaline, with a slight fuscous stain along the anterior margin of the superior pair. Taeniogonalos costalis (Cresson 1867)(N. COMB) NAMERICA Allophocera (TACHINID) TAEN Y AREA BETWEEN VERTEX AND CARINA SMOOTH The specimens from Costa Rica have a solid yellow scutellum; while those from NA are variable. Spm's from Florida, Arkansas, Missisippi have a mostly yellow scutellum, most others have a parallel yellow stripes. Males have a deeply impressed or flattened circular area on metasomal sternum 2. Specimens of costalis from Florida [FSCA] are intermediate between Taeniogonalos costalis and T. gundlachii, as they have the gena mostly yellow and the scutellum completely yellow. Taeniogonalos gundlachii has large yellow markings above the antennae. The yellow laterad of the eye cover most of the gena, and is much larger in gundlachii than in costalis or the undescribed Dominican Republic specimen collected by L. Masner. The light-colored markings in the specimen from the Dominican Republic are white, possibly due to the preservation fluid in the flight intercept trap. It differs from gundlachii in having the scutellum all black (all yellow in gundlachii, variable in costalis), and the light colored marking being more extensive in gundlachii, especially above the antennae. The armature is also not so differentiated into a separate bifid tooth- but rather the whole hind edge of the 2nd mestasomal segment is evenly curved, i.e., in costalis the armature looks like it has been pinched, so that it rises up directly/abruptly/quickly from the medial portion of the apex of the second metasomal segment. Tyloides are linear but not as elongate as costalis (in costalis they extend the length of 4 of the 9 segments they are present on). On this specimen fasciatipennis the tyloides are only on 5 segments, and only on the basal half or 2/3rds of each segment. [At least the apical third of each free of a tyloide]. Xanthogonalos robertibuyssoni Schulz 1907 CAMERICA CAPSULE T +? Y MESOPLEURON SMOOTH ABOVE AND BELOW Type of genus, designated by Viereck (1914). Specimen from Costa Rica closely fits figure in Schulz (1907). No types of this species are known to exist, and this specimen will be designated as neotype. This is because the genus description of Xanthogonalos is apparently a composite of genera, and there could be confusion not only as to which species is referred to but which genus (Article 75 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature). Qualifying conditions in article 75 are: 1- differentiating characters are found in the key to Xanthogonalos. 2- (Label information will distinguish the specimen) 3- Schulz (1907) does not list the location of the type. Koch (personal communication, 1991) does not list any Xanthogonalos at Humboldt. Weinstein and Austin (1991) list the deposition of the type as unknown. I have written major collections requesting information regarding the deposition of Trigonalyidae. 4- The designated specimen is similar to the illustrated specimen in the description. 5- The designated specimen is the only one known to me, and is from Costa Rica. The type is described as being from Mexico. 6- The neotype will be returned to the BMNH. SMALL BLADE? ON TERG3 UNDER TERGITE 2. 6TH TERGITE CAPSULE-LIKE. LEGS ABOVE Y. SIDE THORAX Y. Labidogonalos sp. 2, FLATBLACK UNKNOWN CAMERICA TAENIO B / BN Male genitalia dissected. FLAT BLACK W/ GRAY EYES. Leading edge of wings very dark. Apical edge of petiole yellow. No ridge between antennae; genae narrow, with flat plane facing backwards. Parameres elongate, aedeagus more or less elongate symmetrical- definitely not nobbed or clubbed. Antennae thickened, spindleform, but with tyloides present. 25 segm. Mandibles 3-4. occipital carina bends towards mandible. Tyloides possibly closest to Labid. ornata. Propodeum with two parallel yellow marks on each side of foramen, no taller than foramen. Distinguished from other Taeniogonalini by its thickened antennae, from other Labidogonalos by its black appearance. Distinguished from Seminota and Lycogaster by the presence of tyloides in the male and yellow markings on propodeum. Tyloides have an elongate central keel surrounded by oval flanking sides, on segments10-16 (#16 small, first two longest), centered on and longer ones approximately two thirds length of flagellomeres. Leading edge of wings very dark. Black, closely punctate sculpturing gives it a dull appearance. Yellow markings all small: Fine lateral lines at top of sides of pronotum; spots at anterior end of mesoscutum mesad of notauli; lateral anterior part of mesoscutellum just behind mesoscutum; outside of middle and hind coxa and outside of hind tochanters; two c-shaped marks at base of propodeum, no taller than foramen; apical edge of petiole (distinct dorsally, fine ventrally); fine mark at each hind lateral edges of tergum two; second sternum with yellow line at hind edge expanding anteriorly on either side of midline (like horns). Pseudogonalos Schulz 1906 #* (genus) [Trigonalis Spinola 1840: Trigonalis Spinola 1840, was not used until Oehlke, (1983) characterized it as the description of a new genus. Article 33 section c of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature Ride, 1985 #267 states "Any subsequent spelling of a name different from the correct original spelling... is an 'incorrect subsequent spelling'; it is not an available name...." ]. Since it is apparent that Spinola had no intent of describing a new genus (he attributed the genus mistakenly to Klug), it is obvious that Trigonalis is not an available name. Orthogonalys Schulz 1905 #* (genus) ORTHO a line taken from the hind part of eye towards the mandible ends behind the eye in North American Orthogonalys, while it ends in the midpart of the mandible in the South American Orthogonalys???!!!!! ) <- I don't think this is so???? Generally, the propodeum of pulchella (NA) is white with a black medial stripe, narrower than the white on either side of it. The propodeum of boliviana (SAmerica) is black with light lateral marks- but dorsally it is almost completely back. The mesoscutum of pulchella has a white U or lyre-shaped marking. Variation: Sexual: The female has a broader, almost flattened abdomen, while the male has an elongate narrow, almost tubular, abdomen. Genitalia illustrated in Tsuneki (1991) p. 27, fig. 70-75. Orthogonalys formosana Teranishi 1931 ASIA, EASIA ORTHO Holotype lost (?); described in Teranishi 1931 as being in collection of Mr. K. Takeuchi. Tsuneki was not able to find the holotype and because of possible confusion or synonymy between it and more recently described species I consider it important to designate a neotype. [I must write Tsuneki and ask his blessing xx]. The qualifying conditions in article 75 of the Zoological code on nomenclature are met: 1) The species can be differentiated by the following characters: Midline of thorax and propodeum with white spots of varying size and intensity- center of scutellum and dorsellum each with white spot, a white spot on mesoscutum and propodeum. A species from Java in the genus Lycogaster is similarly marked but it would not be confused with Orthogonalys. Hind femur and base of hind tibia amber, remainder of hind tibia dark brown. All males have the autapomorphy of white parameres. 2) The neotype is very similar to the male figured in Teranishi 1931. The left antenna is broken after flagellomere 8 with the remaining 16 flagellomeres glued to the label, the right antenna broken at flagellomere 12. It is 9mm long with forewing length 8.5mm (same lengths given for holotype). Label information: Musha, Taiwan; 25 vi-5 vii 1947; Coll. Maa, Chen, and Lin. [Label 2] Orthogonalys formosana ;Teranishi 1931; NEOTYPE; desig. Carmean 1993. 3) Tsuneki (1991) and Weinstein and Austin (1991) both state the holotype is lost. Teranishi (1931) states the type is in the collection of Mr. K. Takeuchi. 4) This female appears closest to the drawing of the holotype of the 8 specimens (6 males, 2 females). Size variation is great within species of Orthogonalys and especially within this species, and the neotype is the same size as the holotype. All other specimens I have seen are much smaller. 5) Both the holotype and neotype are from Taiwan. 6) The neotype is deposited at TARI. [TARI, NEOTYPE (N. Black with pale yellow markings on mandibles, clypeus (except narrow front edge and darkened central lengthwise line, a large interior and exterior orbital stain; 3 customary crosswise stains on the metanotum; insignificant brightening up areas at the back-ege of the 2nd tergite, large triangular lateral spots, somewhat in front of the back angles of the 2., small inconspicous ones at the smae location of the 3.; larger, irregular-shaped ones on the 4th, two almost square spots on the 5th whereby the black middle spot (present between them), is almost the same size as each of the yellow, lateral stains, small rond specks on the 6th tergite and a narrow apical band on the 2nd sternite. The wings are transparent, with a weak brown tint, which is only a tiny bit darker in the area of the radial and cubital cells, and strongly iridescent. Sculpturally, this genus is very close to fasciata Strd., but the abdomen is marked or dotted much more glistening. The antennae are somewhat thicker and shorter. 9mm. Back of head is a yellow cross-wise ribbon, which turns to brown towards the sides and in the middle on two tips which are looming towrds the front. Thorax, including lower side-rims of pronotum, and the middle cross-wise bulge of metanotum. Scutellum, axillar pieces, tegulae and side bulges of the metanotum are rust-red. Wings are clearly transparent, but with a strong dark clouding which encompasses almost the entire radial cells and half the fields located outside the cubital cells. At the abdomen, at the back edge of the first tergite, there is a pure yellow cross-wise stain which leaks forward in the middle, and a similar spot on the corresponding sternite. The remaining abdominal markings are more reddish yellow, and they consist of a narrrow back-edge cross-ribbon at the 2 tergite, which becomes slightly wider towards the sides, and of a triangulr spot in the depression up front of the same tergite at its front edge.... Taeniogonalos zimmeri (Bischoff 1933) N. COMB. ASIA SEASIA Oceana Male allotype has tyloides (Bischoff 1933), thus I remove it from Lycogaster. Described by Bischoff 1933 as close to pictifrons. Female (holotype): 13mm. Black with yellow-white markings and widely extended red thorax disk. Head w/ 3 light spots on clypeus, on either side a facial beauty mark, which runs from the lower 2/3 of the eye rims to the antennae roots, a tiny speck on the feeler roofs, the exterior orbital vein as a wide splash, as well as two insignificant little spots in front of the anterior ocellus. The top of the thorax, including the tegulae, are red, however, at the pronotum, this coloring is also reaching over on the sides. Within this red base coloring there also appears more or less distinct yellow markings. Wings dimmed lightly brown, darker at anterior and apical edge. Abdomen: large cross-wise stain at back margin of tergite 1; one each of oblique side stains, which are distinctly separated from the back edge of the 2nd tergite, and which are pouring themselves in fairly pointed tips toward the inside; 2 much smaller, also obilique, spot on the third, and indistinct, light little dots on the 4th. Underneath on the 2nd and 3rd sternites, a light marking is observed. Male (allotype): Lower face is entirely yellow, beginning from 2/3 of the eye-level up towards the front, except the mandible teeth, the narrow front edge of the clypeus, and a black triangle between the base of the antennae. A yellow spot is in front of the anterior ocellus, and there is one on either side of the lateral ocelli. A wide splash of yellow is at the temples, up to the height of the vertex of the eye. The exterior and interior orbitals has a tiny yellow speck. Back of the head yellow, dispatches towards the the front 4 pointed tips, of which the lateral move toward the temple yellow. Red coloring of thorax limited to lateral portion of mesonotum and to the axillary pieces. Wings are paler than the female, browning of the front edge does not extend as far to the base as in the female. The abdominal markings are similar to the female though more extensive: spots on the 2nd tergite almost touch on the inside. Missing an abdominal armament. (Not Seen): Holotype F from S. Lycogonalos BISCHOFF 1913 #* (genus) Lycogonalos, nov.gen. (Translated by Mary Berbee) Body middle-sized, thickly punctate, almost dull, only in the back border of the head somewhat shinier; with short-spreading, thick pubescence. In the male specimen at hand, the frontal processes over the antennal roots are widely separated. The antennae themselves approach uniform thickness. If the apex is particularly strongly attenuated I cannot really determine, because the apex had broken off. (21 segments of the antennae remain). The 9th through 12th antennal segments possess tyloids on their outer side, which resemble (difficult to see) lengthwise keels (??). Shoulder angle rounded. The scutellum is transversely rounded and considerably arched, in the middle of its length, still markedly sunken. The legs are slender; the last tarsal segment is markedly slenderer at is base than at its apex. The wings are cloudy pale brownish with a brownish obscure spot paler on one side than on the other lenthwise on the front edge. The pterostigma is long and slender, not particularly chitenized, so that it posseses a more cell-like appearance. Both of the veins that go backwards run almost into the interstitial space with the cubital cross veins. The propodeum is, if also not strong, elongated beyond the base of the middle coxa. The propodeum is, over the middle, longitudinally sunken, especially in the front, and here, over the furrow, is transversly striated. The central upper surface of the metathorax is proportionally little arched. The abdomen is slender; 1st segment of the disk (central upper portion is indented?) indented, the second likewise depressed until over the middle. the rear edge of the segments from the third on, including the third, is depressed and there almost flat. The ventral segment of the male is armed. The first ventral segment is, as seen from the side, is somewhat ?umbonate. The second has, in its middle, a tooth which projects somewhat to the back. Behind the tooth is an equilateral, triangular indentation. This indentation is almost flat and shiney. Its base lies at the back edge of the segment. On the third ventral segment is found a bow-formed indentation, which reaches from the back edge to the middle, and which is likewise flat. The ground color is black with "leg-like" golden markings. flavicinta n.sp. The shape is that of the generic description given; it is therefore still necessary to give only the coloration. The antenae are light brown, toward the apex out blackish. In addition, the tibia and the tarsae of the collective legs, as well as the apices of the front and middle femus are light brown. The remaining markings are pale gold. Thus colored are the madibles with the exception of thier outer edge, two big side spots on the cypeus, the two sclerites of the head capsules on the distal sides of the head, the outer edges of the orbitals for the most partand about 2/3 of the inner edges; these yellow portions are widened into triangles from the antennal roots out. The protuberances over the bases of the antenae are likewise light yellow. Other light yellow regions on the thorax include the the back side edges of the pronotum a short distance in front of the light brown wing tegulae, before the parapsidal lines, two small punctate-formed spots on the depressed lateral field in front of the scutellar region, the same size on the the lateral fields of the post scutellar region, and two longitudinal spots in the back of the propodeum. Light yellow in addition are the trochanters, at least in part. The abdomen also exhibits rich yellow markings, a large, drawn-out spot with two points that begins at the rear edge of the first tergite; a small band that lies at a distance about equal to its diameter from the apical edge of the second segment, and which becomes broader from the side out where it encroaches upon the ventral segment but is there interupted in the middle. The following ventral segments are black. The 4th and the 5th dorsal segment each posess transverse bands that are condensed(?) on side, and with narrow interuptions in the middle; the following dorsal segments are almost completely light. Length: 10 mm. Xanthogonalos Schulz 1907 #* (genus) SAMERICA Capsule Type of genus is X. robertibuyssoni Schulz 1907. See comments under that species. Genus is superficially similar tothe species Labidogonalos ornata and Trigonalys maculifrons, in that it is elongate and mostly light colored. Observed specimens of Xanthogonalos differ from these species in having an elongate second submarginal cell with a distinct petiole- at least as long as the pedicel. Xanthogonalos differs from most other genera in that a line taken from the hind part of eye towards the mandible ends behind the eye in Xanthogonalos, while it ends in the midpart of the mandible in the other genera (exceptions: Pseudonomadina, Nomadina, possible exceptions: Orthogonalys(Not all- certainly not male) (Not South American Orthogonalys???!!!!!). The line in Nomadina ends behind the mandible because of the long ocular malar space. Eyes much larger in male Schulz: (translated by Erika, shortened and paraphrased by myself ) Body medium size, moderately corpulent ot slim; the greatest part of it marked with dense wrinkles and hair growth sticking up; at the back abdominal terga the hair growth is hsort, close to the body, plushy. Its antennae have less distance from each other than with Seminota. Forehead cones are distinctly developed, slant pyramid shaped, separated. The feelers are somewhat longer than with the aforementioned spcies, and thickened behind the middle, the male with tyloides at the outside of the middle antennae segments. There is a posteror head: that is there exists a sloping surface from top of skull to bottom of head. Thorax has rounded off shoulder corners. Front of the dorsulum drops off steeply to pronotum. Middle segment of shield squarish, somehow bloated, however, pretty flat on the disk, without a lengthwise groove. Back shield is slightly convex. Legs are longer and more frail than the other genus, comparatively; the first tarsal section is unthickened towards the end, and therefore with a straight underside. Wings are tinged yellowish, the front ones have a little darker shading along the front edge; stigma moderately thick. On the back wing the cubital length vein is running out at the origin of the cubital cross vein, therefore it forms one continuous closed line with that one. The middle segment is extending in back a little beyond the basis of the back hips, gradually sloping off, flat on the disk, without a lengthwise groove, more or less convex at the sides, however always without protruding corners. The back abdomen is elongated, its first ring sitting in back and with a straight tergum edge. The remaining terga at the back edge somewhat grooved out and indented, smooth. Sterna of the female armed as with Seminota. Costume is wasp-like: yellow base color with rich brown markings. 5 Specimens observed:(Argentinian and Venezuelan spm same sp.) 2M [BMNH],Colombia: Putumayo, Mocoa; 20.vi.1974; M. Other genera have mesothoracic spiracle covered by pronotal lobe (Gibson 198 ). Cameron differentiated Liaba from Nomadina by ---Wings with 4 cubital cellules; the 3rd cubital cellule small, receiving the second recurrent nervure; the first joint of the antennae small- Nomadina ---Wings with three cubital cellules; the third cubital cellule large, extending to the apex; the second cellule receiving the recurrent nervure [no mention of antennae]- Liaba Cameron describes Liaba: The front is furrowed down the middle; on either side, behind the ocelli, is a depression next to the raised occiput; the antennae have a distinct pedicle; there is a narrow but distinct, longitudinal furrow on the mesopleurae; there is a similar narrow longitudinal furrow on the mesosternum. Male Genitalia: aedeagus clubbed, like a triangular hat; parameres compact. Can be differentiated from Pseudonomadina and Bakeronymus which both have a less reduced pronotal collar (almost absent in Nomadina) and less reduced palps (so reduced in Nomadina as to lack visible segmentation- usually palps not visible at all). 9 Specimens seen, appear to be 3 species (1- small, bright yellow and black, from Ecuador; noticable deep indentation at base of petiole; 2- larger (13mm) Brazil, Tan, distinct declivity, neck, behind ocelli; 3- Panama, chestnut, no neck or declivity behind ocelli: [UMMZ, 1F], Panama, Boquete; Chiriqui Prov. Teranishia Tsuneki 1991 #* (genus) Tsuneki suggests that this genus, plus Pseudogonalos, and a third genus represented by Pseudogonalos harmandi Schulz "seem to build a separate subfamily, Pseudogonalinae, based on the common character that SAE is completely included inside the antennobasal hollow." However, Teranishia has no tyloides. New Genus, new species, described from at least 9 males and 7 females. 8/3/93 790 310 428 G

Taiwanogonalos Tsuneki #* (genus) New genus of 7 new species described from 8 specimens. Males have tyloides but Tsuneki (1991) described it as closely allied to Orthogonalys. Taeniogonalos sp. 2 unknown male from Papua New Guinea ASIA SEASIA Oceana Closely related to Taeniogonalos 'guinea' but different species. Abdomen black except propodeum and top of petiole white (similar markings as melanoleuca). Taeniogonalos masneri sp. 4 hispaniola NAMERICA America Caribbean Similar to Taeniogonalos costalis but light markings white instead of yellow. The scutellum is all black (all yellow in T. costalis from Cuba, variable in North American T. costalis), and the light colored markings are more extensive in T. costalis from Cuba, especially above the antennae. The armature is bifid but not so differentiated into a separate tooth- rather the whole hind edge of the 2nd mestasomal segment is evenly curved, while in T. costalis the armature looks like it has been pinched, so that it rises up acutely from the medial portion of the apex of the second metasomal segment. Anterior half of forewing including basal cell blackish, while in T. costalis the anterior half of forewing may be amber or smokey, but the basal cell is not darkened . [1F] DOMINICAN REP.; Prov. Afrigonalys #* (genus) gen. n. The species within this group appear closest to the Asian Lycogaster. The red abdomen with thin terga, elongate shape, and the square blocky head create a superficial resemblence to Orthogonalys. ? ornatissima has the scutellum and middle of dorsellum white, with extensive white markings on head. xx erythromelaina has the head and thorax all black except the mandibles and a small intra-orbital white mark. Viereck 1914 made Trigonalys pulchella the type of the genus. Unaware of this, Bischoff 1938 made Tapinogonalos maschuna the type. Since Trigonalys pulchella is in Orthogonalys, this makes the genus Tapinogonalos a synonym with Orthogonalys. Thus a new genus must be made for the species described within Tapinogonalos.
