Nagasaki Spirit

Project Brief

Teekay Corporation is a multinational maritime shipping company. However, the focus of my work at Teekay is on video work, ranging from cinematography to post production with an emphasis on sound, video editing, and special effects. I was assigned a big video project that is a big component of the company’s history. It was the crash of the Nagasaki spirit back in September 1997. In 2017, it was the 25 year anniversary of this tragic event and one of the project managers in the department wanted to create a special video to commemorate this event and show memory to those who lost their lives on that very tragic day.

Role Selection

My focus of work at the multinational maritime shipping company, Teekay Corporation, specifically encompasses video tasks, including cinematography, post production, special effects, and sound. As part of the 25th anniversary of the tragic historical crash of the Nagasaki Spirit, I was assigned to create a video to commemorate the the event as well as to pay respect to those who lost their lives.

Inspiration

Being a painful story to remember, my project lead and I sifted through the archives for documents and photos around the time of the Nagasaki spirit, as well as creating a questionnaire to ask interviewees. After we found old footage of the ship under fire and documents to help us paint a better picture of the story, we flew to Houston Texas to capture interviews.

Filming

I filmed and interviewed the founder’s brother Axel Karlshoej, and Tommy Hsu, a founding board member of the company. I also captured two phone interviews from company executives who were close to the incident as it occurred. After piecing the story together, we incorporated not only the old photos, but some of the interview footage taken to create an emotional piece.

Challenges

Initial Editing

The largest challenge was ensuring everything was verified by the legal department, as the video would be shown externally to the public on the day of the anniversary. After multiple iterations and changes, we wanted to end the video with a message about seafarer safety and how it is an integral part of the company’s history.

The video was shown at the Manila Seafarer Conference and posted on all Teekay social media channels. The video was a success and multiple board members emailed my supervisor saying the video was done in a very thoughtful and sensitive manner.

Reflection

This video was an integral part of my coop experience at Teekay and showed my love for telling stories with very little material and still being able to get the point across in a tasteful and meaningful way.

It inspired me to tell more narrative through my chosen craft. .
