Samsung Shorty is a web application that allows employees to shorten, track, monitor and manage URLs. Instead of conventional shortening services, Samsung is now able to produce and track branded URLs, such as http://sams.ng/4ecPZA. This is especially useful for social media and sharing long URLs internally.

Administrative overview

I was approached by the project manager to design a responsive web application that would combine four features. My role in the project was to oversee the user interface from planning to launch, including post-launch improvements.

For the statistics interface, a few sketches helped to visualize how the features would come together and also surfaced some of the fine details that would need to be discussed with the project manager.

A quick render was used to communicate my intentions to the project manager and the developers. I was able to address some of the questions that I encountered while sketching the interface, keeping in mind that it would need to scale to mobile.

The next step was to build an interactive prototype that combined visual design, interaction and content into a cohesive interface. However, I was concerned that some of the interactions were confusing to users, so I met with six other designers to catch heuristic errors. The three actions icons and the logo were provided by visual designers from the UX team.

After addressing usability issues, I presented the concept to the development team. I then collaborated with a front-end developer in order to pass visual assets and styles into the beta version.

This project gave me a better understanding of the production pipeline. I learned how to discuss my designs with the project manager, designers and developers throughout the iterative process. As a result of my involvement, the beta version of Samsung Shorty has been released to the Vancouver R&D lab for use in daily URL sharing. Moving forward, the beta will undergo end-user testing to improve usability and value.
