Graffiti Male Character

Character Design/Modeling

The graffiti character goes side by side to the punk style tank game that my studio was making. My focus on this part of the project was to complete the character design and finish the character model for the game. However, similar to the tank model, since we do not have a concept artist, I mainly design it as I was making the character.

Since I have never touched Z-brush before this point in time, the character was made fully in Maya. I started by doing a lot of research on basic human anatomy. I looked through multiple articles that talked about the human body and also existing 3D models on sketch fab. After having the basic knowledge and also tons of references, I continued by creating the body with simple shapes. I was having a lot of trouble in this section because of how difficult it was to create organic shapes within Maya. I was able to overcome that just by tweaking it over and over again.

The next section was even harder. I have never done clothing before, therefore, I started my process selecting part of the character's body and started tweaking on top of that. Same as any other process, I started by doing a lot of researches. I was heavily influenced by Fortnite's art style, as it has a similar cartoonish art style that we wanted to mimic. As for the folds on the clothes, since our studio doesn't really have a 2D artist for texture, we couldn't really create the folds within the texture. Therefore, I manually added lines in order to create the sense of softness.

Overall, the character was definitely an important milestone for me. I was able to learn a lot related to human's anatomy and 3D modeling technique during the experience. The whole process took around a month (on and off because of school).
