Scar-H Game Model

Gun Modeling/Texturing

Scar Heavy was a project I created mainly to support my friend and his new indie game. The project is pretty simple, my friend needed a gun for his first-person shooter game, and after talking to him about what type of weapon, we decided to create a scar-heavy for player's default weapon.

In order to model an existing weapon, I started by learning about the weapon itself. Scar-H is quite a popular gun, therefore, its dimensions and previous existing models are everywhere for me to get the reference from.

I started the project by simply creating the generic shape of the gun. After having the size down, I continue by adding on the details (ex. the iron sight for both the body and the barrel). This part is quite simple, I focused on creating a gun as realistic as possible based on the reference.

The next part is where I ran into a little bit of trouble. Maya itself is not really good at curves, however, the handle is pretty organic shape compare to the body of the gun. Therefore, I have to manually shape the curve out, which takes me multiple tries in order to create a satisfying handle.

After finishing the handle and the bumper, I started adding in the small parts of the gun (ex. the switch for automatic and semi, the nails, etc.). With the model basically completed, I imported it into substance painter to texture it.

As for texture, I ran into a lot of trouble with the AO of the gun, apparently, there are some lines that were messing it up. This project also helped me practice my use of the height map. I was able to creatively blend multiple existing heightmaps to create a unique material for the gun.

Overall, I am very happy about the result of the gun. It is quite an interesting project as this is my first time making a realistic prop for a game. This project overall took me around 2 days to complete.
