Graffiti Tank Game Model

Tank Design/Modeling

Graffiti tank was probably one of the more ambitious project I have tackled with ever since I started doing 3D modeling. As my game studio decided to create a punk style tank game, I started thinking about the overall design of the tank. It is quite difficult since none of us can do concept art, therefore, the process is not quite normal as I was designing it as I was making the tank.

The whole tank started from the track. I looked through reference such as 'Metal Slug' for the tracks of the tank. For the bottom body of the tank, I wanted to create something that is both kinds of 'scrappy' while also being futuristic. I wanted a tank that feels like it is from an apocalyptic world but also being punky. Before I continued on, I went to look at sunset overdrive's styling and just the general shapes and color that they use, so I have a mental understanding of what it would look like at the end. As for the modeling part, I started by trying multiple different shapes (I remember I even tried cylinder once). Once I found a shape I like, I started adding in the details (ammo boxes, vents, chains, etc.)

The bottom part of the tank went by super fast since I was able to find the shape I wanted pretty easily. However, the top part of the tank wasn't that easy. Since the tank is completely made out of scratch, the shape doesn't really exist anywhere else. There aren't that many shapes for the top part of the body that could fit with the bottom. It was so difficult for me that I started working on the cannon instead. For the cannon, I took reference from other concept arts on Google and try to merge it with the different style to create a junky but futuristic feeling.

How the top body comes together was kind of a mystery to myself even. I kind of just trying to merge different shapes and pieces together and it overall just worked out at the end. For the control center, I focused on creating a funny and unrealistic game control for the tank. This kind of fits the vibe that I wanted the whole game to be like.

This project was truly a huge stepping stone for my 3D modeling and designing experience. It took me a long time to complete the process. Overall, the project was a blast to work on, and it took around 2 weeks to complete (on and off because of school).
