Because we are not going to have manypeople at school in the summer. * We plan to have 2 or 3 hiking activities in the summer 4) Brea gave us the results of the Forum Meeting * There will be 15% tuition hike in the fall of 2004 * BC government takes off the entire grant and gives the students even more loans. 5) There will be a President Meeting of Forum on 7th April. 6) We checked the box having stickers, T-shirts, the basis of Environmental Student Union and other old documents. We also had Some comments on the T-shirt design. Maybe we will get the new ones without the big black prints at the back. 7) There will be a social with the Earth Science Students Union coming. We will give away several T-shirts as prize of the party and whatever we left in the budget. 8) Aaron Springford brought us some Trade Fair passes (for developing the business of the environment). Sherrill will email Hattie regarding this change. 2) The executive discussed activities for this semester. There will be Movies provided by Imax everyday at 2pm and 8pm. The entrance fee is $9 each. Several date proposals for the movie date are made. The students will also hike with the hiking club. 3) We approved for 1 team to go to the Scavenger hunt and pay the $5 dollar registration fee. If anyone interested, please email: envsc-exec@sfu.ca. When: Feb 28th, 12:00 pm sharp. Location: RCB 6102. 4) There is a Career fair on Feb 24, 1pm-5pm, at the segal centre of Harbour Centre. We decide to spend $100 to help geography student Union covering the career fair cost. 5) We all agree to have a calendar of event on our website. Howard will take care of this. 6) Aaron will advertise the coming events. 7) There will be a science student meeting on March 4th, 12:30-2:00. The meeting will be most about the elections. 8) Brea gave some information about the Furom and their plans of supporting students through bursary. 9) We spent $10 dollars for today's meeting. Book Locker: The student union presently has a book locker located in the physics wing (Locker # B6318). Roger has made up an information sheet which will be posted in the locker and given to the executive, active members, and the SFSS. The combination for the book locker will be given primarily to the EVSC executive. There is more EVSC Student Union "Stuff" that we must find storage for soon. These items include. a. Box of T-shirts b. WOW Game Supplies c. Microwave -Also, the present locker must be renewed in August for the following year. Jody and/or Adam suggested that they might be willing to renew the locker. -Finally, Roger still needs to be reimbursed for the book locker rental fee for the Summer 2003 semester. All approved that $11 should be released from the Trust Account for the Book Locker Rental Fee. 2. Bulletin Board: The Environmental Science Student Union finally has its very own bulletin board in the AQ 3000 (near the entrance to the Chemistry Wing). The initial set-up of the board is complete, but I has great potential and requires some innovation and tender loving care. The bulletin board will also be used to promote student union meetings and events. Ian has expressed interest in helping to maintain the bulletin board. Suggestions for the board so far are: a. updated articles on ecological or environmental science subjects (Ian). b. preliminary results from the deer website surveys (Roger). Please let the student union know if you have ideas or opinions regarding The Board! The key for The Board is currently in the Book Locker and should be returned to Rosemary Hotell in the Dean of Science Office if the Student Union does not renew the Book Locker. Also, thanks Rosemary for your help getting us a bulletin board!!!!!! 3. In order to release this semesters core budget of $200 we must have a second meeting. Roger suggested that the meeting should be used to hold elections. This would require significant advertising and thus a solid meeting time. It was tentatively decided that the second meeting be held Thursday June 26, 2003 at 10:30 AM (Rm TBA). Anyone interested in helping on the EVSC student union executive next fall should contact envsc-exec@sfu.ca or rtp@sfu.ca and should attend this EVSC meeting on June 26. -Brea suggested that the student union be active this semester. Ideas include a contest to give away the microwave, a pub night, etc.... Anyone with ideas or initiative please contact bcaron@sfu.ca. Brea would love to organize a student union event! 4. A preliminary assessment of the Student Union finances: The student union presently has about $193 in the Trust Account and the Core Account will be at $0 until after the second meeting. If the activity remains low over the summer the $200 core funding can be used in the Fall 2003 and/or Spring 2004 semesters. Ideas for Semester Activities BURNABY MOUNTAIN MONITORING Ian mentioned that he is involved with the Burnaby Mountain Development Working Group and he was wondering if the student union has had much past involvement. Ian also suggested that EVSC SU think about developing a Burnaby Mountain Monitoring Program which could include Stream Water Quality, Stream surveys and Tailed Frog surveys. Ian has talked to Rick Routledge about the idea and he seemed supportive. Roger suggested that this might be a good direction to take activities of the student union and thought that student union would be interested in the volunteering opportunity and would likely be willing to donate funds to such a project. OCEAN SUSTAINABLITY FORUM Brea asked that the student union consider supporting a Ocean Sustainability Forum being developed by a Graduate Student in REM. Roger suggested that the REM student send EVSC SU a proposal or come give a presentation at one of the weekly meetings. PUB NIGHT Brea suggested that we have a PUB NIGHT The Pub Night could be held during the week of Jan 27 in place of the regular meeting. This pub night could also serve as a General Meeting. Approval: No disagreement on this issue BANNER Roger brought up the possibility of having a EVSC SU banner with the new logo on it. Brea has an old banner that could be reused. Hoodies - Pam reminded people to go vote for fonts. Deadline is this Friday (Nov. 1) After the font is decided then orders will be taken by email. A deadline for payment was not finalized but will be around mid-November so hoodies can be in before the end of semester. Roger said that Jenn did not attend the forum meeting, and suggested reminding her to go to the next one. Roger will be ordering pizza. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE STUDENT UNION MEETING MINUTES October 21, 2002; MBC 2290 Present: Roger, Pam, Brea, Linda, Paula Roger gave an update on permanent bulletin board: not moving along much Fonts for hoodies were ranked by those present and narrowed down to 4. Pam will put them on the website for people to vote. Deadline to vote for a font will be Nov. 1, and orders for hoodies will be accepted until Nov. 15. Pam also suggested putting ordering info about t-shirts on the website as well as for the upcoming hoodies. Brea said her used banner is very large and may not be suitable for our new banner. It was mentioned that SFSS can give a grant for a new banner. Pam gave an update on the scavenger hunt. Each participant is to pay $10, and there were no objections to the fee by those present. Pam is the contact person for the hunt. Logistics to be worked out when list is received. Deer sightings have yet to be forwarded to Parks & Rec. Roger told of an amusing recent deer sighting by some construction workers. Roger suggested a food/pub night for a meeting in the future. It was decided that pizza would be ordered on Nov. 4th when the temporary bulletin board is set up. A non-meat pizza will be ordered from Pizza Factory for the meeting, which will last from 3:30 until about 5:30. Roger will send out an email about next week's meeting, which will be to plan/finalize ideas and materials for the bulletin board. Week of Welcome Proposal. Finer details were worked out for our union's proposed participation in next Fall's Week Of Welcome at the beginning of the semester. We're proposing to run a giant board game of fun eco-facts. We discussed details about materials needed, from poster boards to markers to spray paint for giant dice, as well as some ideas for mini prizes for each round and potentials for a GRAND prize at the end of our day. We will have sections for the programs and for the student union, as well as pictures, our logo contest, contact information, etc. Monday the 25th people will be meeting in Linda's lab (SSB 6129) at 12:30 to start putting together materials and format what we want on the board. Around 5:30, people will then be gathering in front of the board to start putting material up. Attending: Linda, Carrie, Roger, Andrew, Bree, Jennifer Agenda: 1) Logo Contest: We're excited about our inquiries thus far and hope to attract more! Our tentative deadline is March 22nd and just a reminder that a hard copy will be needed for judging. We will make more class announcements, television notices around campus, websites updates and continued notice on my.sfu.ca. 2) Meeting next week at 12:30, but still need to confirm a room. 3) Social: Andrew is working on it and looks like it will be the last week of March. 4) Plant Salvage: We can do another plant salvage, but we need somewhere to donate. Our last one was such a success and those that accepted our donations are still placing them. Please keep an eye and ear out for any organization that could use some the local Burnaby Mountain flora. 5) Message Board: From Monday, Feb 25th to March 8th we have reserved a large posterboard outside the Alex Mackenzie cafeteria. Career Fair-Decided that a Career Night would be a good idea instead of trying to have a full fair on our own. Hope to invite some local businesses and companies in the environmental, biology or other related environmental fields to come to a night for presentations and discussions. This is intended to be a networking for students and to get an idea of some of the job opportunities in the local area. For next meeting, everyone is asked to bring along a few ideas of people/companies we could invite. 2. Clubs Day-Tuesday and Wednesday January 15th and 16 th we will have table #17 set up in the north concourse of the AQ where interested students can come check out what environmental science is like and how to get involved. An email will be sent around to relay the schedule for those sitting at the table over these two days to answer questions and hang out. 3. Pub Night- Hopefully to be set up for the week after Clubs Day. Linda will talk to the pub to see when we can have it and perhaps get a few deals on food and beverages. Time will probably be around 5:30 and looks like it might be better for people on Tuesday, the 22nd. 4. Social-Hoping to set up another social this semester, perhaps joined again with Earth Science, considering the fun had last semester. It will probably be closer to the end of the semester, and further plans will be made in the near future. 5. Logo Contest-We are still in search of a new logo for our student union. The contest will be advertised in the near future and a monetary prize of $50.00 plus a gift will be given to the most popular design. The contest is open to the whole student body and designs will be voted on at our social. 6. Meetings-More frequent, shorter meetings are being considered for the rest of the semester. Those who'd like to be able to attend meetings should send a copy to Linda (lmhanson@sfu.ca ), the Chair, who is trying to coordinate the most convenient time for the most people interested. 7. Still on the lookout for a common room for our student union. One potential site was spotted and will be further checked out by Linda. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE STUDENT UNION MEETING 28NOVEMBER2001 IN ATTENDANCE: Linda, Bree, Andrew, Erin, John, Vanessa, Tanya, Roger, Carrie MINUTES: 1)Thank you cards will be sent out to the wonderful places that donated pots for our plant salvage. The plant salvage was a success with about 150 plants donated to local stream keeper groups. Thanks to everyone that helped out. 2) We have a table for the next clubs week for January 15th and 16th. We will all start thinking of some ideas for our table and when people can volunteer to hang out at the table and answer any questions. 3) Our next meeting will be sometime in the first week of next semester. Further details will be emailed later by Linda. 4) Steve has contacted Career Services to start the process of getting involved with the next career fair next semester. Hopefully people will start to think about some of the people, organizations, businesses, groups they would like to see in the fair. 5) For our social on Friday, we need a few volunteers, especially for clean up (at 9:30 p.m.). Roger and Linda have agreed to help clean up and Carrie, Erin, Vanessa and Tanya will offer help for setting up. Roger will bring an attachment for the BBQs and those willing to offer up their culinary skills for a little while will probably get a free burger and beer as thanks. 6) Constitution amendments. Position of social coordinator has been accepted. Some of the duties for this position include: -to plan and coordinate social events -promote said event(s) in conjunction with Public Relations Officer -to get permits associated with setting up socials and other similar events (including the 'Serving it right' ticket, which the union will pay for) 7) Roger suggested we set up a group to formally research and push for some sort of common room for environmental science. Agreed upon to establish a 'Common Room Task Force', which Roger, Erin, Carrie, Linda and Andrew have already agreed to contribute to. The goal is to find out exactly why we don't have such a room yet, and how we can go about achieving one. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Environmental Science Student Union Meeting Wednesday 14 NOVEMBER 2001 IN ATTENDANCE: Carrie, Andrew, Steve, Roger, Bree, John, Linda, Erin, Anna 1) Plant Salvage Saturday, November 24th. Meeting in B lot at 9:30. Will tell people to bring their own shovels, but perhaps a few extra will be provided if people have extra. Still need to look into getting pots, Linda said she'd check into it. Will also ask people to bring a some if they happen to have any. Roger still waiting to hear some confirmations from a few groups to take some of the plants. Another email will go out this week from Roger about further detailsin regards to what to bring, where to meet exactyl, etc. 2) Social Friday, November 23rd, 4:30 ~ 9:30p.m. on fourth floor of the AQ. Earth Sciences working out most of the functional details as they pretty much normally would. We will offer more help later on once they get a handle on what needs to be done. Co-sponsorship of Postcard Campaign - a motion was passed to approve co- sponsorship of the SFSS postcard campaign to SFU President Michael Stevenson opposing tuition fee increases. 2. Upcoming Events: * Plant Salvage - It was decided that the plant salvage will take place at 9:00am on Saturday, November 24th. Roger, Steve and Tanya will meet with Eric Emery (Bby Mt. Development Corp.) on November 8th to survey the selected area. We still need to organize equipment (shovels, pots etc.), Roger will talk to the SFU garden club about borrowing some of theirs. * Joint Student Union Social - It was decided that we will work with the Earth Science Student Union to co-sponsor a Christmas Social. Event Ideas: * Plant Salvage - Roger suggested organizing a plant salvage to collect native plants which can be utilized by local stream restoration groups. He has already contacted several groups who have expressed interest in the idea. The event will likely be in mid-November. * Joint Student Union Social - We would like to organize a social event in coordination with another, related, student union. Andrew will contact the Earth Science SU to see if they are interested and Steve will talk to Geography. * Career Fair - Steve suggested we organize an Environmental Career Fair to be held in the spring semester. We discussed the possibility of doing this in conjunction with other departments or Career Services. * 24hr Famine - Olivia would like to get a group together to participate in the upcoming 24hrs famine. The event will be held on campus Nov 1-2. Olivia will send out an email with more details. * Logo Contest - It was decided that we need a new logo, therefore we are reopening our logo contest. The winner will receive a free T-shirt. 4. Deer Sightings The deer sightings website is now up and running (thanks Pam). The purpose of the site is to collect information on Burnaby Mountain's deer population. Amphibian survey - Another idea that Dr. Routledge had was to do some amphibian surveys before the development begins. This could be the start of an ongoing project to monitor the effects/changes the development has on the local populations. 3.) Sci - discussed obtaining a bulletin board - small possibility of a temporary common room - Field Course : EVSC 491-3 - Begins the week of August 20th, for two weeks, one at SFU and another in the field, possibly the Okanagan, the first week will be doing environmental monitoring around Burnaby Mountain, and the second running an experiment from start to finish. There will be two assignments, a literature review pre-course, and a post-course lab report on the experiment. - should be close to the end of your Env. Volunteering: Mossom creek: nothing going on, John brought up an idea in langley planting trees on February 10th, he will email the list and we will attempt to organize a couple car loads of people go out from SFU to participate. Under section VI: The position of treasurer we merged with that of secretary The duties of secretary are: taking meeting minutes, handling club money The duties of Webmaster are: maintaining the student union website, maillist, and posting any announcement and related information to the list aswell as on my.sfu.ca The duties of PRO are: design and distribution of posters, classroom announcements and publicizing all club events Under section VII: Terms of office shall be for minimum 2 semesters, up to one year. - Pending approval of the constitutional changes, Randy was elected Secretary, Pam Webmaster and Ross Public Relations Officer. - at this point Randy left and Linda too over writing the minutes - we discussed the volunteer work that the student union has recently got involved with at the Mossum Creek Hatchery - meeting adjourned at 1:15 To view the revised constitution click here -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Environmental Science Student Union General Meeting October 17, 2000 Once again, there were six of us at the meeting: Ana, Linda, Ross, Pam, Wes and Randy - Linda nominated Ana to be chairperson, seconded by Ross - Randy nominated Pam to be treasurer, seconded by Wes - Pam nominated Randy and Linda nominated Wes to be Departmental Reps, seconded by Ross and Ana - after reviewing the constitution , we agreed to call the next meeting for the purpose of amending it - Ana met with the president of the Biology Student Union, re: joint social, we will be providing some assistance to them for this event November 17th - set next meeting for two weeks from today -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Environmental Science Student Union Meeting September 19, 2000 - with only six of us in attendance, the first thing we discussed was emailing the list about a better meeting time so that more people could attend - doing some joint events with the Biology Student Union was also discussed in brief - LOGO contest: with no entries as yet, we've decided to keep the logo contest going until further notice - Volunteering: interest was expressed in getting involved as a group in some environment related volunteer activites - Next Meeting: time to be decided after email sent out, advertise in Peak and my.sfu.ca, to hopefully run elections -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Environmental Science Student Union Meeting February 23, 2000 The 3 main issues discussed were: 1. Planning an EVSC Student Union Social 2. Designing new departmental T-shirts 3. Questionnaire EVSC Social: We don't have a definite date yet but we are planning a social at the pub for the second week in March. We will have a table set up in the AQ March 13 & 15 to gauge interest and get the word out about the student union. (we won't plan a pub night if no one is interested so let us know if you plan on coming) Logo Contest: Want a free ESSU T-shirt? All you have to do is design a winning logo to go along with our proposed slogan: Putting the mental in EnvironMENTAL, and you get your shirt for free. The contest is open to all members of the SFU community. Designs must be submitted by Friday, March 10th. You can drop them off in the student union's mailbox (student society general office). Questionnaire: Juliette has generously offered to compile a questionnaire to help us gather information about the current Environmental Science Program. We want to know what you think. (Which classes were useful, which were useless? What do you like, what other courses/skills would you like to see added to the program? Etc.) Hopefully it will be completed by next week so watch for it.
