Founded at Georgia State University in 1977 by a group of highly motivated undergraduate students, Golden Key was among the first honor societies to focus on leadership and service in addition to academic recognition. The organization valued diversity and brought together honor students from different backgrounds as well as from different majors. Today, Golden Key has 332 chapters universities in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States. Scholarship, leadership and service still stand as the organizations foundation. The one-time fee of CAN $90 is for lifetime membership. Golden Key is a non-profit organization, and no other fees or dues are required to maintain your lifetime membership. Approximately 75% of the membership fee is returned as benefits and services to the chapters and members in the form of chapter funding and receptions, publications, scholarships, certificates, chapter consulting, the Canada Conference and the annual international convention. The remaining 25% goes towards the administrative costs of the Society. Membership is transferable from one chapter to another without having to pay additional fees.
These scholarships are awarded, during the reception ceremony, to the top, second, third and fourth year initiates. 3 scholarships of CAN $750 are awarded among new members at each chapter induction ceremony.
