Call for Submissions!

We're looking for submissions of both poetry and visual art for our January zine. If you've got a soul you need to share or bare, send your work to hapoetry@sfu.ca; the deadline is September 21st.

Call for Volunteers!

HAP doesn't run itself. We need people to help with planning open mics, selecting poems (yes! this means you can have direct control over what gets published in HAP!), and designing our zines. We're also looking for wonderful people to run for executive positions in our Fall elections. The fun just never stops!

About HAP

by Rob Taylor

What is High Altitude Poetry? Hell, it hardly seems worth writing down, as it will most likely be something else before you read this. Since 2003, HAP has been a club focussed on small-group readings, large open mics, and publications. Though not always all three at the same time or with the same intensity, those are, in essence, the balls we strive to juggle.

What binds all of HAP's activities together, I like to think, is a focus on building the SFU poetry community. HAP readings have been, for many, the first place they've ever read their poetry aloud (myself included in that category). Likewise, HAP open mics and publications have pushed SFU poets to share their talents in wider arenas. At the time of this writing, over 60 new voices have been printed in the pages of the "High Altitude Poetry" zine - over 50 of which have been SFU students - and hundreds have attended readings and open mics.

That being said, all this has only been possible because of the tireless work of a number of talented volunteers. They plan events, select and produce the zine, fold and staple it, and dress up in funny costumes.

Talented volunteers don't grow on trees, however. Nope, they aren't magical wizards or hobbits or anything. They are you. Yeah, you. Reading this. So contact us and volunteer. The club only stays alive if you are there pumping at its chest.

Now that you are a committed volunteer, feel free to peruse the website. Read the zines, and the scintillating author bios, and check out our upcoming readings dates.

And don't forget to rocksteady.
