Book Club Rhymes - 2003 edition

A poetic review (of the past year's titles...)

There was No Great Mischief Under the Volcano (as the Desolation Angels could tell you). The Year of Wonder brought The Plague to the Women Who Walked Into Doors, and the Last Orders were for the Peppered Moths.

Kerouac, Lowry and Swift
All had characters who needed a lift.
Stopping at one was never a rule
So they became a bit of a tool
Because they were thoroughly stiff!

We read so much dribble from Drabble
She just continued to babble
When only the men liked the sots
We thought the women were looking for plots
But we only got drivel from Drabble! - Larrie

The Peppered Moth (Margaret Drabble)

Said an author, obsessed with her mother
"A novel I'll write, like no other.
I'll offer the rabble
Some dribble from Drabble.
And those who dislike I'll just smother." - Michael

Desolation Angels (Jack Kerouac)

From a tower in the Pacific Northwest
Like, Kerouac, man, began his quest
He wandered here and there
Set the 'cool rule' for us to share
Then decided home with mom was the best.- Fred

When Jack sat on top of the mountain
He pulled out his pen (ball, not fountain)
"I sought desolation
But need recreation.
On drugs, booze and women I'm countin'" - Michael

Under the Volcano (Malcolm Lowry)

There was a young man named Lowry
Who may not have had much of a dowry.
But when he had a bout
Even his nationality was in doubt
Therefor he could even me maori! - Larrie

Dogged by a canine pariah-cal
He pondered the heaven zodiacal.
"T'is the Day of the Dead,
So I'd best stay in bed
To avoid my doom dipsomaniacal." - Michael

The Plague (Albert Camus)

If you'd like to become influential
A maxim of life is essential
"All work and no plague"
Though it sounds a bit vague
Is the basis of thought existential! - Michael

Life of Pi (Yann Martel)

Young Pi on a raft must make do
While wandering the ocean so blue
But, with a tiger to feed
Says he to himself, "Take heed!"
"How will I make room for all of this poo?" - Fred

Last Orders (Graham Swift)

A trip with the boys to the ocean:
How better to show our devotion?
As ashes Jack started;
He's now "Dear departed."
That's not what I'd call a promotion. - Michael

No Great Mischief (Alastair Macleod)

The Scots are a loyal, hard fighting lot,
Old Quebec was their next war-making spot,
Wolfe yelled into the trench,
"Send me lads who know French"
No Great Mischief was the thanks that they got. - Fred
