Book Club Rhymes - 2004 edition

The 2004 edition is a somewhat scanty offering for which I blame the busy pre-Christmas season. One member came through with flying colours (and a limerick), and we tried collectively to make up for the general lack of poetry by working together to pen one other. I recommend the exercise: 8 dedicated readers around a table with a few bottles of wine and a couple of plates of appetizers, trying together to pen 5 lines of rhyming doggerel. The limerick's multiple endings illustrate the dangers of this method of composition...

On the Book Club itself...

At first the club's goal was to read
Then quickly this yielded to "feed"
But, when all is said and done,
We've other appetites more fun.
All these children are proof of the deed! - Fred

The Old Curiosity Shop (Charles Dickens) - written en masse

The perigrinations of Nell
With her Grandad, who was quite unwell
Took them far afield
'Til the truth was revealed
[ending 1:] And gave Dickens a story to tell.
[ending 2:] But that was a story to tell.
[ending 3:] Read the book to see what befell *
[ending 4:] Good intentions can lead straight to hell.
[ending 5:] And a bell rang out poor Nell's death knell.
