Shown below are samples of the output files that are generated by the suite of
three Perl scripts in Appendix B of this paper. The samples shown are a very
small subset of the total data. They are extracted from the data covering the
first week of May, 1995.
A sample of the ".ssn" output file, generated by the "sessions.pl" script
As noted in the comments within the "sessions.pl" script,

within the raw WWW server data records. Each record within this file is in the

this output file gives detailed information on the various "inter-page
transitions" which occurred during the sessions detected in the raw WWW logfile
data. The data is identical to that in the ".trn" output file, except that the
".trs" file is sorted by transition count, while the ".trn" file is sorted by
initial page name. "Inter-page transitions" are of particular interest in
hypertext publications, where there are frequently multiple choices for the
reader's next page, unlike traditional texts, where pages are normally accessed
in sequential order. The column headings below detail the information contained
within each field of the records. A page name of "<HYPERSPACE>" is used to
indicate either the start or end of a session on this server, since the page
previously (or subsequently) accessed by the reader would not be recorded in this
server's logfile.
