Thanks for your reply Michael. Quanah has replied to my post on the
forum and he thinks that it was a lock contention issue. At this point I
have not seen the issue return but will be posting to the forum if it
does along with the results of a db_stat which will report if there are
LDAP deadlocks. I've also replied to your questions below.

No, I was hoping for something higher level, but if I do I'll let you
know. Since I can't reproduce the problem by running the backup I don't
think stracing the slapcat will point out much, aside from revealing
more about how the backup works. If it consistently introduced the
problem then strace would be good.

Yes, the backup is what I believe to be the cause.

I haven't checked that.

Local RAID1 SAS on a Dell m605 blade.

[fultonj@zldap0 ~]$ mount | grep opt
/dev/mapper/vg_root-lv_opt on /opt type ext3 (rw,noatime)
[fultonj@zldap0 ~]$ grep opt /etc/fstab
/dev/vg_root/lv_opt /opt ext3 noatime 1 2
[fultonj@zldap0 ~]$ df /opt/
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/vg_root-lv_opt
                      47580024 1510348 43613716 4% /opt
[fultonj@zldap0 ~]$

> - Have you examined the filesystems with iostat ?

No, I haven't. I will consider trying that if it comes up again. I might
also fsck /opt since I initially wondered if it was a file system issue

> - Any errors in dmesg or /var/log/messages?

No, it revealed nothing specific to Zimbra. /var/log/zimbra also
revealed nothing.
