We did the same, but did not trade our souls to the Devil.

We went from RHEL5 to 6, and ZCS 6 to 8, Using 7 as our intermediary.

Ubu12 wont run any variant of 7? We found 7.2.2 (iirc) to the the
sweet-spot for compatibility.

We upgraded our zcs6 rhel5 machines to zcs7.2.2. Added in our RHEL6
ZCS 7.2.2 machines, retiring the rhel5 proxy, ldap, and smtp's as we
did. Then we ended up with our entire new platform in place, with the
old stores still containing all f our accounts.

We then spent a few days migrating accounts via a script to our new
stores. Then decomissioned the old ones.

We then did an in-place upgrade to zcs 8.

We found this to be the least painful and stressful migration path.
