I received my PhD in Geography from the University of British Columbia
in 1996, after earning an MA from Lancaster University, and a BA from
the University of Alberta in the late 1980s. I
held a SSHRC postdoctoral fellowship at the Centre for Refugee Studies,
York University, after which I took a faculty position at Arizona State
University. In September 2000, I joined the department at SFU. My non-academic
experience includes work as a relief worker for CARE in Kenya, and as
a field officer for a UN agency in Somalia.
