Research activities

For the last decade my research has focussed on late Quaternary environmental change and natural hazards in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. My prime areas of interest are the incidence of ancient tsunamis and earthquakes, and the reconstruction of sea-level changes.

The analysis of these changes has been undertaken mainly from an examination of the stratigraphic and palaeoecological evidence preserved in coastal lakes, bogs and marshes. In particular, I have attempted to interpret the evidence revealed by changes in the assemblages of microfossils (especially diatoms) in lake, bog and marsh deposits. I have also utilized archaeological evidence and Native oral tradions to assess the effects of prehistoric catastrophic natural events on coastal settlements in these regions.
