Reporting to the AVP, Actuarial Projects, the Director, Experience Monitoring is responsible for providing direct leadership and day-to-day oversight of Canadian Individual Insurance's Experience Monitoring Unit (EMU). Key accountabilities include managing and mentoring six professional staff, ensuring that annual Experience Monitoring Reports and triennial Experience Studies are completed for our Life and Living Benefits business, and managing the development and maintenance of our new Experience Monitoring System.
As the leader of the Experience Monitoring Unit, the incumbent will ensure that the needs of key stakeholders (e.g., Pricing, Valuation, Management) are met, and will be responsible for presenting and defending actuarial assumption recommendations to Senior Management.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Oversee the production of annual Experience Monitoring Reports on key Life and Living Benefits assumptions, as well as the creation of quarterly New Business reports and industry submissions;
  • Provide professional guidance and statistical expertise to ensure that triennial Experience Studies produce assumptions that are appropriate for the intended application;
  • Develop leading experience measurement methodologies for novel products and emerging risks;
  • Manage the ongoing development of our new Experience Monitoring System and ensure that the embedded logic is updated, if necessary, for new products and product features;
  • Work with key stakeholders, including Pricing, Valuation, and Management;
  • Present and defend actuarial assumption recommendations to Senior Management;
  • Develop project and/or resource plans as is necessary, and manage ad hoc experience data requests;
  • Mentor and develop staff;
  • Keep current on, develop, and champion standards, technologies, and methodologies.
  • Graduate degree in Statistics, Actuarial Science, or a related field;
  • 5+ years experience in a quantitative environment, preferably in the financial industry;
  • Understanding of Individual Life and Living Benefit insurance products, including their risks;
  • Knowledge of the measurement of product experience;
  • Experience working with, and drawing conclusions from, large datasets;
  • Demonstrated ability to present technical concepts to a non-technical audience;
  • An actuarial designation (e.g., ASA, FSA) is an asset but not a requirement.
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills;
  • Ability to motivate and lead;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Self-starter and inquisitive;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Good organization and interpersonal skills;
  • Commitment to excellent customer service.
