HALIFAX, Nova Scotia—Atlantic Canada’s largest academic health care organization, Capital Health, is recruiting a

Senior Biostatistician—for the Research Methods Unit (RMU), Research Services Department. The RMU is a new core research facility designed to promote and support clinical and health research in partnership across the Capital Health, the IWK Health Centre teaching hospitals and Dalhousie University’s Faculties of Medicine, Health Professions and Dentistry, and is seeking a collegial and versatile team-player to provide statistical consultation and service to clinical investigators within this partnership. 

Reporting to the Director of the Research Methods Unit, and collaborating with other consultants within the RMU and partner clinical and health researchers, the senior biostatistician will be:
·         Function as lead biostatistician for the Research Methods Unit in providing or delegating consulting support in all aspects of biostatistical service provision
·         In collaboration with RMU team, determine approach to tasks and recognize when additional statistical and programming consultation is needed and communicate requirements effectively
·         Proactively collaborate with user groups to identify biostatistical research methods needs for projects and work interactively to address such needs.  Examples include organizing or conducting:
o    Study Planning, e.g.: 
§ Formulate research questions that translate into hypotheses in a form amenable to statistical analysis framed within suitable study designs
§ Develop statistical methodology and analysis plans for descriptive, analytic, and experimental cross-sectional and longitudinal study designs including RCTs and observational studies
§ Run study sample size calculations
§ Create randomization lists for treatment allocation in RCTs
o    Data Management, e.g.: 
§ Clean and configure data
§ Develop coding schemes and data dictionaries for databases in conjunction with data manager and PI’s
o    Data Analysis, e.g.: 
§ Write complex programs to process and summarize data
§ Conduct statistical analyses
§ Interpret results of statistical analysis
·         Contribute to the writing of manuscripts, abstracts, slide presentations, and posters

II.    TRAINING – 20%
·         Mentor and train junior associates and assist them in the identification and planning of appropriate professional development activities
·         Present at professional scientific meetings, publish research findings
·         Present lectures
·         Maintain professional knowledge by reading journals and textbooks, attending internal and external courses and conferences, and undertaking methodological research
·         Conduct related administrative duties at a senior level
Minimum Qualifications:
The senior biostatistician must have a minimum of:
·         PhD in biostatistics or statistics plus at least five years of full-time consulting experience in a clinical research environment preferred, or an M.Sc. in biostatistics or statistics plus at least seven years of full-time consulting experience in a clinical research environment
·         Professional Statistician accreditation from the Statistical Society of Canada (or qualification within one year)
Required Skills:
The senior biostatistician must demonstrate:
·         High level of proficiency in clinical biostatistics
·         Ability to successfully work in a multi-institutional clinical research methods service environment as a senior member of a team
·         Ability/willingness to establish efficient, consistent and coherent standard operating procedures for biostatistician contributions to research projects
·         Commitment to literate data analysis to ensure statistical analysis and data management code is documented, replicable, transferable and publishable
·         Commitment to contributing to a clinical research educational agenda and to mentoring junior biostatisticians
·         Excellent problem-solving skills
·         Ability to work to deadlines and within budget
·         Excellent communication skills including advanced written and spoken English skills
·         Ability to effectively communicate statistical methods and results to clinical researchers who may have limited biostatistics training
This is a full-time position supported by institutional funds and is not dependent on grant support.  Salary will  commensurate with experience.  The qualified candidate will receive a faculty adjunct appointment at Dalhousie University.
