Cancer Surveillance - within the Division of Population and Public Health - collects, analyzes and interprets information concerning cancer occurrences, cancer risk factors, and cancer care in Alberta. Reporting to the Manager - Analytic Team, the Surveillance Analyst will work with a multidisciplinary surveillance team including other surveillance analyst, epidemiologists, biostatisticians and cancer registry staff. They will become an active team player in supporting the on-going population cancer surveillance and will be expected to be able to communicate with researchers, medical staff, administrators and the general public in relation to surveillance activities. Key responsibilities would include:

  • Perform statistical analyses related to cancer surveillance information (e.g. cancer incidence, mortality, projections, prevalence, survival analyses).
  • Assist in the writing and compilation of Surveillance reports.
  • Work jointly with other team members to answer data requests using the Alberta Cancer Registry and other data sources.
  • Provide interpretations of analytic work and produce summaries of results.
  • Carry out ad-hoc investigations and other related duties as required.


  • Master's Degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, Mathematics or Epidemiology. Equivalencies will be considered.
  • Experience with quantitative analysis of large population datasets.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience using statistical software packages (specifically SAS and R)
  • Strong organizational skills and time-management skills.
