Programmer/Biostatistician for ICES@Queen’s Health Services Research Facility We are a multidisciplinary group that conducts health services research using Ontario administrative health care data. Our work includes the study of diverse clinical areas, such as cardiovascular disease, dementia, and oncology, and projects will include the study of basic epidemiologic trends, treatment safety and effectiveness, patient decision-making, and health policy. The incumbent works collaboratively with investigators to assist in the development of dataset creation and analysis plans, and manages, records, analyzes and presents results to the investigators. The incumbent may provide advice and guidance to other staff as required, and may participate in other special projects from time to time. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Responsibilities include carrying out dataset creation and research plans in collaboration with the supervising investigators, including (but not limited to) the design and writing of computer programs for data analysis. Advanced techniques, procedures and protocols are prepared using scientific methods, and personal judgement is used in order to adapt procedures as required to meet the needs of the project. The programmer/biostatistician refines existing datasets, helps in the development of new datasets, and analyzes these data. Provides computerization and statistical analysis of research data for (or in collaboration with) the investigator. Prepares visual and verbal presentations and written reports, and drafts sections of manuscripts to be submitted for scientific publication. Participates in the production of research papers and attends work planning meetings of the project team and the Department. Other specific responsibilities are to prepare linked datasets from large administrative health care databases, and to develop and maintain in-house databases, which may include developing and documenting a body of knowledge around datasets and resolving data issues as they arrive. The incumbent will be a member of the Programming and Biostatistics group and ICES and, as such, will benefit from and contribute to the common goals and activities of that group. He/she may undertake other duties or special projects as required in support of the unit (e.g., creation of macros and templates).
REQUIRED BACKGROUND AND SPECIAL SKILLS Master’s degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Public Health Sciences or other related discipline, with a solid background in quantitative skills/statistics. Experience with SAS (including SQL and macro writing) programming skills are required. Related research experience is an advantage. An understanding of concepts of health services research, how to use administrative data in this research, and have an appreciation for good quality data and attention to detail. Must be self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a research team. Should possess good oral and written communication skills. Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience. Determine analytical approaches and programming techniques. Decide how to optimize protocols to obtain the most accurate results. Adapt procedures to solve research problems or to gain a new perspective. Respond to inquiries from external partners and other researchers and determine where to redirect inquiries if required. Determine whether a particular procedure falls within ethical guidelines, and make concessions or adjustments as necessary and possible. Deadline for applications is Friday, June 14th, 2013.
