Sessional Lecturer Position in Statistics Education: Part-time Position
The Department of Statistics at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver Campus, invites applications for a sessional lecturer position as part of a team involved in an innovative high-impact project to enhance introductory statistics education at UBC. Introductory statistics is taught in departments spanning many UBC faculties. Typically, instructional resources and expertise are not shared across units, resulting in duplication of efforts, underuse of valuable material, or material that—due to time constraints—is not as fully developed as desired. This project’s team includes 11 faculty members in 7 departments in the Faculties of Science, Arts and Medicine, with all faculty involved in teaching introductory statistics. The team will work cooperatively to develop a vetted collection of high-quality open educational modular resources on introductory statistics, including in-class activities, personal response (clicker) questions, simulations, case studies, screencasts and on-line individualized homework. Resources will be organized and shared through an easily accessible open online platform that will be developed as part of this project. The project is funded by the UBC Flexible Learning Initiative (http://flexible.learning.ubc.ca/), a multi-year program designed to encourage flexible and innovative approaches in higher education. We anticipate the position will be renewed, as the project is expected to have continued funding to expand the number of resources developed and the UBC classes where material will be used.
We are currently seeking one individual to work with project members—faculty, Graduate Academic Assistants, and staff from the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology and the Science Centre for Learning and Teaching. The incumbent will assist in the development of learning objectives, advise on best pedagogical practice based on relevant research, and assess the impact of the resources created. We anticipate that the incumbent will mentor junior members of the team and, if time allows, provide some hands-on resource-use training to Teaching Assistants and instructors.
Candidates should have completed their M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Statistics or a related field, with some experience in teaching statistics. Candidates with educational background in other fields will be considered, provided they have extensive experience with statistics. Candidates should have experience in curriculum development, blended or online learning, developing educational resources and activities, and using the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) to inform practice. Candidates should have excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, and strong personal commitments to improving education within the discipline. English fluency is also required.
The position is expected to be 20-35% part-time, with salary commensurate to relevant education and experience, and will depend on the successful applicant. The appointment can begin as soon as mid-April 2015 but is expected to start no later than September 1, 2015, and will end on March 31, 2016 with possibility of renewal. The Department may be able to expand the appointment with other duties, such as teaching.
