I wanted to make an animation that really focused on expression and timing. I found a short video with some funny audio that really showed a character’s personality effectively. I decided to recreate it.
After watching the reference video many, many times, I chose my rig, and began syncing his mouth movements to the audio. This part proved to be difficult because at first I was trying to add too many expressive details by referencing the video.
I eventually stopped doing that and focused on making simple mouth movements to sync to the audio.
Once that was done, I then started to play around with details such as uneven mouth corners, crooked lip movements, and slightly slurred mouth shapes to add the personality from the reference video.
From there, I slowly breathed life into the rest of the model by animating the eyes, the head, and the shoulders.
I kept the background simple because there didn’t need to be much context to the interaction.
I believe that I managed to recreate the same laid back feeling for the character as in the original reference video. I do wish there was more detail and something more happening within the scene, but for the simple exercise, I believe I accomplished my goal.
