Percept is an immersive environment installation designed to allow users to visualize their emotional responses to various external stimuli, such as imagery and sound. Using an electrocardiogram sensor to measure heart rate and a galvanic skin response sensor to measure the electrical resistance of the skin, the system uses these values to gauge the user's anxiety level. This in turn affects the visual and aural output in Percept in a positive-feedback loop, the user's biological responses being the dependant variables. Eventually, the user will come to the realization that emotions such as anxiety and fear are only perception. They are a state of mind rather than empirical existence. One's circumstances are, ultimately, determined by choice.
Percept is a project presented by Ryan Boechler, Crystal Cui, Daniel Jagger, Rachelle Kirsh, Luma Shehadeh, and Kelly Waters.
