Group Responsibilities -

1 >> Researching for your Proposal

Choose whether you will be a British or French explorer of early Canada. Then delegate a leader in your group, and ask each member which specific issue of the fur trade and early exploration of Canada that he or she would like to investigate.

-- For example: trade routes, establishing relationship with aboriginals, sustaining trade post.

It is encouraged that you draw on examples from the Hudson's Bay Company and the Northwest Company. You might also address how the fur trade has allowed the exploration of Canada towards the West.

Afterwards, as a group collaborate in order to formulate a proposal to present to your respective empire. Discuss the possible impacts of your proposal and the implications of your viewpoints.


2 >> Proposal Write-up

Prepare a well written proposal that outlines and answers the following:

The potential benefits and risks of establishing a permanent trade settlement in the New World.

Describe daily life in Aboriginal communities, New France, and British North America.

How the fur trade will lead to further exploration of Canada and to recognize the potentials of her resources?

How the introduction of Europeans and their way of life will affect local Aboriginals?

What will make your particular expedition to be a successful one?


Class Responsibilities -

  1. 1 >> Proposal Presentation and Debate

    Each group will present their proposal for approval by the entire class. This will also provide an opportunity to see if you have covered the areas that are required well in comparison to the other groups, and to critically think about what you have learn from your research on the fur trade. Building on the knowledge and ideas gain from the debate, the leaders and members the all groups are encouraged to further revise their proposal prior to submission.
  2. 2 >> Reflection Discussion

    Discuss and reflect on the ideas and important facts raised in the proposals and the debates, and to correct any misconceptions. Particularly, the discussion should inquiry into why and how the fur trade was able to lead to the exploration and the eventual confederation of Canada.
