Notices:

I am still dealing with access issues to the syllabus.  In the meantime, I’ve put it at Coursys.  https://coursys.sfu.ca/2018su-phil-100w-d1/pages/1184100WSyllabus

Most of the information linked here is for registered students only.  If you think you should have access to something you don’t, please wait until after midnight that day and refresh your browser.  If you’re still having difficulties, email me.

I will always put newer notices at the top, so you don’t have to scroll down to check.

There are no tutorials in the first week of term.  They begin the week of 14 May.

The syllabus link above has important information about test dates and assignment due dates.  It is behind a password, so available to registered students only.  The system updates at 09.00 everyday, so check back.  If you have problems, email me.

In the meantime, start reading:

·        excerpt from Chapter 2 of Writing Philosophy (hence WP2 for 2nd edition and WP1 for 1st edition) WP2=pp. 21-34.; WP1=pp. 22-36.  Either edition is fine.  (I do not expect this reading to be done before the first lecture.  But it should be done right after it!)

·        start on Descartes’ first two Meditations  From the site www.earlymoderntexts.com

Start using your clicker in lecture right away, whether or not you’ve registered it.  I’ll start counting “for credit” as of Wednesday 16 May.  I will post at Gradebook whether or not your clicker is successfully registered around 16 May, and will let you know when I have.  The software is tracking responses even from unregistered clickers.

To register your clicker: go to http://www1.iclicker.com and follow the directions.  Your remote ID is either on the back, or behind the battery, or on the display.  Your student ID is your username (e.g., jillmc) NOT your student number.  Use the short version (not jillian_mcintosh) and do not include “@sfu.ca”.  Please indicate that we are NOT using a LMS.  (If you registered your clicker recently, you likely will not need to re-register it.  See above for how to tell whether or not it seems registered to me.)

Sorry, but clicker apps are not acceptable (e.g., for a phone or tablet).  There are time lag and other problems.  You may use either an i>clicker 1 or an i>clicker 2.  You do not need to own the clicker you use, but you should be able to bring it to every lecture, have it registered to you, and not share it with somebody in the same class.

Recorded lectures should be available at www.sfu.ca/~lectures.

Lecture notes (the week’s slides as pdfs nine to a sheet, with some clicker questions removed) will be available at the “class pages” section of our Gradebook after each week’s classes have been given.

If, during the term, you have any health problems for which you might seek accommodation, please have your health care provider use the SFU standard healthcare form (and get well quickly! J)

If you have a disability that you would like accommodated, contact the Centre for Students with a Disability and speak with me in a timely fashion if you would like to request my assistance.

Any requests for accommodation on religious grounds are to be received by the end of the third week of classes.

Any requests for accommodation with respect to the Final Exam must conform to the regulations listed here.

Please keep in mind that you are responsible for reading all University email sent to you (so, from me and also from Administration or Registrar’s).  If your SFU account is not your default account, have mail sent to it forwarded to your usual account.

Let me know if you have any questions!
