Osiibye otyano!
I spent about 2 months in Uganda, volunteering
with KARUDEO, in association with United
Children's Fund, Inc. Unfortunately, I had some major problems
with these organizations (click here for more details),
but overall, my experience living in rural Uganda was extraordinary.
I lived on a farm in a village near Masaka, and worked on a number of projects
there, including teaching english at a World Vision-sponsored school, helping
out with a nursery school class, teaching seminars with a women's co-op
group, and participating in outreach programs with a local missionary hospital
(most of which were not run by UCF/KARUDEO but by other excellent organizations).
The people I met there were incredible
and the experiences I've had there are unforgettable. I was even
adopted into the "Grasshopper Clan" and given a grasshopper name: "Nakajubi",
which means one who cuddles or embraces. I also had a chance to do
some sight-seeing around Uganda, including Lake Mburo NP, Lake Nabugabo
Resort, the towns of Kampala, Masaka, Mbarara, Jinja and Entebbe, Bujagali
Falls and the source of the Nile river, and the Entebbe Wildlife Centre.
Overall, it was a life-changing experience!
