PROJECT1: ICON
The first project of my graphic design course. This individual course assignment was to create an app icon that showed its function. My app icon represents an app that writes your emails for you. The objective was to practice design process and principles.
The first step was to brainstorm the possible objects connected to the app’s concept, for example, email, artificial intelligence and typing.
With the objects from the brainstorm in mind, I sketched 40 different variations of the icon.
Then out of the 40 sketches I chose one to elaborate on.
I received critique from the TA that my icon did not clearly show what it did.
At first my icon was an envelope with a face, and so I added a pencil to represent “writing”.
The next step was to create the icon on illustrator, which involved creating shapes and lines.
After that, I created the smaller versions of the icon and edited them to be more legible.
Finally, the last step was to put together the process document, which showed the whole process from ideation to the final product
Personally, I liked how my app looked. However, I can see how the icon isn’t clear on what the app does. I think it did allow for me to practice using the design process and principles. This was also a good introduction to Adobe Illustrator. If I were to do this project again, I would focus more on representing the apps function rather than its appearance.
