Like many of the England soccer stars such as Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole, Michael Carrick, Frank Lampard used to be a player for the West Ham United Academy team. He has been promoted to the senior team and began his professional career after a short spell in the reserves. Since then, he has been involved in the starting XI regularly. But as his uncle / head coach of West Ham United got sacked in 1999, Frank Lampard decided to move on and join Chelsea FC.
It costs Chelsea £11 million for the transfer 5 years ago, and many soccer commentators thought he has been over-rated and did not worth that much money. Over the last couple years, he has become a lot more mature and experienced, and he has developed into a franchise player for Chelsea. He is the one who drives Chelsea on in the middle of the pitch game after game. Some people call him “The Ironman” because he has held a Premiership record of playing 164 consecutive games in four seasons. That run came to an end in December 2005 because he had a flu and he missed the game against Manchester City.
2004/05 will be a season that Lampard will never forget. He guided Chelsea to their first league title in 50 years and they won the Carling Cup in the same year. He was voted English Footballer of the Year, runner-up for both European Footballer of the Year and FIFA World Player of the Year.
