Wayne Rooney has been playing for the Everton Academy team since he was 12. At that time, lots of people think Rooney has made the wrong decision to choose Everton over city-rivals Liverpool because Liverpool is one of the most famous soccer clubs in Europe. Rooney was handed his senior debut on the opening date of season 2002/03 against Tottenham Hotspurs. His talents were soon recognized when he scored his first senior goal against the defending champion Arsenal in the last minute, and that goal ended Arsenals 30 games unbeaten record.

He was soon called up to the England national team. He made his first national debut against Austria in February 2003 and became the youngest player to make a national appearance of the Three Lions. In September 2003, he became the youngest player to score a national goal for the English national team against Macedonia, he was only 17 years old by that time.

In summer 2004, Rooney was once again the star for the English side. He was the tope scored for the team, and came in second in the whole tournament despite missing the last couple games due to injury. After Euro 2004, lots of teams have showed their interest of signing the exciting youngster from Everton. At last, Rooney signed for Manchester United after a deal worth up to £30 million was agreed. He is still the most expensive teenage athlete today. Lots of people doubt he worth that much money, but he soon responded to the critics and scored a UEFA Champions League hat-trick against Fenerbahce in his Manchester United debut. Rooney’s performance will be decisive to England’s World Cup hope in June 2006.
