Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a protocol standardized by IETF to address many issues that Internet Service Providers (ISP) currently face, most importantly:
- It enables ISPs to consolidate many networks of different technologies (e.g., ATM, Ethernet) into a unified label-switching based network.
- It addresses ISPs’ needs for IP Traffic Engineering.
