Definition: Transmission of telephone calls over a packet-based network such as IP.
Also known as Voice-over IP (VoIP)
Circuit-switch network
- Connection is maintained for the entire duration of the call
- Waste of bandwidth (e.g., dead air)
Packet-switch network
- Most efficient use of bandwidth
- Low capital and operating costs by converging voice and data networks into one
- New applications, hence revenue increases
