  1. In assignment 2 in question 2 you dealt with variables tex2html_wrap_inline17 . In class I stated that the if the covariance between two components of a multivariate normal vector is 0 then the components are independent, but I indicated a proof only when the multivariate normal distribution in question has a density. In this case the variance matrix is singular so there is no density. However, in terms of the original Z it is possible to find two indendent functions of Z such that tex2html_wrap_inline23 are a function of the first function while tex2html_wrap_inline25 is a function of the second.

    1. Let tex2html_wrap_inline27 , tex2html_wrap_inline29 and tex2html_wrap_inline31 . Show that tex2html_wrap_inline33 has a multivariate normal distribution and identify the mean and variance of U.
    2. Use the result in class, for multivariate normals which have a density to show that tex2html_wrap_inline37 is independent of tex2html_wrap_inline39 .
    3. Express tex2html_wrap_inline41 as a function of U.
    4. Use the fact that if tex2html_wrap_inline45 and tex2html_wrap_inline47 are independent then so are tex2html_wrap_inline49 and tex2html_wrap_inline51 for any functions G and H to show that tex2html_wrap_inline57 is independent of tex2html_wrap_inline59 .
    5. Express the sample variance of the tex2html_wrap_inline61 in terms of U and use this to show that tex2html_wrap_inline65 has a tex2html_wrap_inline67 distribution on 2 degrees of freedom.

  2. In class I discussed the general formula for a multivariate normal density. Suppose that tex2html_wrap_inline69 and tex2html_wrap_inline71 are independent standard normal variables. Assume that tex2html_wrap_inline73 and tex2html_wrap_inline75 . Find the joint density of tex2html_wrap_inline77 and tex2html_wrap_inline79 by evaluating the formulas I gave in class. Express tex2html_wrap_inline81 as a double integral. I want to see the integrand and the limits of integration but you need not try to do the integral.
