STAT 410 96-2 Assignment 3 Solutions

This was an assignment where everyone might use a different sample. As such these solutions indicate only which formulas in the text are appropriate for the estimates and standard errors.
  1. Total Government Transfer Payments to households in this population. This is an estimate of a population total for which Yhat = N ybar is given on page 21 and the estimated SE comes from 2.21.
  2. Average Employment Income of Employed persons in these households. A ratio estimate: total employment income in the sample over total number of employed persons in the sample. See formulas 2.46 and 2.47 for estimated standard errors.
  3. Percentage of dwellings which are owner-occupied. Estimation of a population proportion. This is a special kind of average. See my example on the referendum in class or 3.3, 3.5 and 3.8 of chapter 3.
  4. Difference between mean household income of owner occupied houses and mean household income of other houses. This is a problem on the difference between two subpopulation means. See section 2.14 and formula 2.67. The populations there must be replaced by two sample variances; these should NOT be pooled as in the formula below 2.67.
