English 808: Theoretical Approaches to Print Culture, 1700-1900

 

Preparation, attendance, and Preparation – 10%

–includes reading preparation, attendance (notification should be given should you need to    miss a class) and contributions to seminar discussion 

Seminar Module Presentations – 10% each; total 30%

–seminar presentations are intended to focus on the case study readings, relating them to the theoretical readings for the week.  Individual module instructors will provide students with further guidance regarding selection and topics.  Students will sign up for all of their seminar presentations in the first course meeting.

–a one page outline of the presentation must be distributed to everyone in the class.

–length: approx. 10 min.
 

Seminar Module Papers – 15% each; total 45%

–this short paper of 5-7 pages must meet the criteria of a coherent, well-argued critical essay.  The argument should focus theoretical and historical concerns of the module on the primary text the student has selected.

–students may develop the papers out of their module presentations and should take account of issues and ideas raised during class discussion.  In addition, students are strongly encouraged to discuss their topic ideas with the module instructor.

–papers should be submitted to the module instructor and are due the week after the module: Week 5, Oct. 6; Week 8, Oct. 27; Week 12, Nov. 24.

–one of the three essays will form the basis of the final web presentation.
 

Web Site Presentation – 15%

–consists of reconceptualizing one of the seminar module papers for presentation on the web, and to the class, as a scholarly research site.  The class presentation will take place in Week 13, Dec. 1, and the final version of the site is due the following week: Week 14, Dec. 8.

–the web assignment will necessitate rethinking the ideas in the paper in a visual format and for a different medium.  To that end, the web sites must incorporate on-line resources for informational, illustrative and critical purposes.

–sites will be evaluated by all three instructors.
