IAT 235 | GOOD VS BAD DESIGN

Good Design

The Simon Fraser University Directory can be considered an example of good design.

Legibility & Typography

The typography used clearly states the purpose of the sign which is to provide a map of the university. There is consistency in the typography which helps reduce visual clutter and avoids causing distraction from the surrounding signage. The font size allows the eyes to navigate from section to section on the sign which helps provide a visual cue as to where information is located on the sign.

Color

The choice of colors not only complement the colors of the SFU's logo but also reduces strains on the eyes which can be a problem if someone is needs to take time to find various locations in the university.

Positioning

The placement of the sign is convenient for visitors since it is located at the entrance of the building and close to the registration area, stairs, elevators, and escalators. In addition, compass position is labeled on right side of the sign making it clear as to which direction the floors and areas are located.

Access to Information

A directory is also included listing all the rooms, faculties, and areas on the campus. The sign is also marked with the number "2" which indicates the floor level. The directory is also categorized according to floor and room number and on the map additional signage is provided in order quickly locate the location a person is looking for.

Design Elements

The design of the campus map is very intuitive for several reasons:

1. The layout represents mirrors the actual architecture of the building therefore making it easier to find the location.

2. The floors are diagonally positioned which gives the map a 3-dimensional perspective and clearly separates the areas from floor to floor.

3. Consistency in the choice of colors helps create clusters that makes reading the labels and floor plan extremely legible.

Bad Design

The Simon Fraser University Printing Card Dispenser can be considered an example of bad design.

Legibility & Typography

The font used throughout the SFU Printing Card Dispenser is poorly designed. Font sizes of both title and subtitles are not standardized. For example: Start Here signage and Coin Here are in two different font sizes. This creates confusion of the importance of each step. Additionally, un unified titles such as STEP 4 causes confusion to users.

Color

The choice of colors are done in an unorder manner. Areas of coloring is not done in priority or sequence. Regions are done randomly and very confusing.

Positioning

The position of each steps are done in an counter-clockwise, which is very unconventional. Input and output devices such as the display, keypad, or money slots seems to be placed unthoughtfully.

Accessibility

The SFU Printing Card Dispenser is placed at a location no where near the printers. It is placed behind a column in front of the computer lab. It can be very inconvenient for people who are printing at the library or other printing stations for quick recharge.

Design Elements

The design of the SFU Printing Card Dispenser is designed very poorly for the following reasons:

1. The layout of the dispenser is designed poorly either in positioning and in labeling

2. The accessibly of this machine is placed at a very incontinent location

3. Non unified titles, font size, and non prioritized colored areas shows lack of thought; and can cause confusion to users.
