WORKSHOP ON ALGEBRAIC AND TOPOLOGICAL METHODS IN GRAPH THEORY

June 24 -- 29, 1991

The First Slovenian workshop on algebraic and topological methods in graph theory will be held June 24--29, 1991 at Lake Bled, Slovenia, Yugoslavia.

This workshop is intended to appeal to graph theorists and combinatorialists with some background in algebra and topology. Students and young mathematicians are especially encouraged to attend.

For any information regarding the workshop you can write to any of the organizers (V. Batagelj, D. Marušič, B. Mohar, or T. Pisanski) at the following address:

IMFM, Graph Theory Conference, Department of Mathematics, Jadranska 19, 61111 Ljubljana, Slovenia (Yugoslavia)

PHONE: (3861)-218-414 (B.Mohar, or T.Pisanski)

Workshop

On-site registration for the workshop will begin Monday, June 24 at 8 am in Hotel Jelovica. The workshop program will begin at 9:30am that day. There will be an informal meeting of the participants already on Sunday, June 23 from 8-10pm in Hotel Jelovica. The daytime schedule will consist of one hour lectures and sessions of contributed talks but there will also be time left for informal discussions.

The following invited speakers will present one hour lectures:

Peter Cameron, Tony Gardiner, Francois Jaeger, Ivan Rival, J.~J. Seidel, Carsten Thomassen, T. W. Tucker.

There will be a scenic trip to the mountains on Wednesday, June 26.

Registration

The deadline for the registration is April 30, 1991. (In some cases we also accept late registrations.) The registration fee is $100 ($50 for students) if paid before April 30. After the deadline the registration fee will be $120 ($60 for students). The registration fee should be sent to the organizers. Please make the cheques payable to IMFM, The Graph Theory Conference. You can also make a bank transfer to our bank account No. 50100--620--107--25731--3239/5 at Ljubljanska banka - Gospodarska banka in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Accomodation

A block of rooms in Hotel Jelovica has been reserved for the participants of the conference. Daily rate for a single room with breakfast and European lunch is approximately 60 DEM ($37) if reserved by March 15, 1991. Only a limited number of single bedrooms are available. The cost for a double room is about 50 DEM per person. Reservations received after the deadline may be subject to more than 20% rate increase. No prepayment is required. All reservations should be sent to the following address:

Fax: (3864) 78-776

When making reservations, please mention The Graph Theory Conference in order for the special rates to apply. The same company that is running Hotel Jelovica also offers reservations in other hotels and campgrounds in and around Bled.

Abstracts for contributed talks

There will be sessions for 20-minute contributed talks. Abstracts should be sent to the organizers by April 30. TeX files submited by e-mail are especially welcome. We expect the papers presented at the workshop to be published in a special issue of a refereed combinatorial journal.

Travel

Lake Bled is a beautiful vacation resort in the midst of the Julian Alps in the north of Slovenia approximately 20 kilometers South and 40 kilometers East of the borders with Austria and Italy, respectively. If you are flying, Lake Bled is only 30 kilometers North of the Ljubljana international airport Brniki. Please let us know about your flight number and arrival time so that we can pick you up at the airport. If you are coming by train that does not stop in Bled, you should exit in Radovljica, Kranj or Ljubljana. There is a regular daytime bus service to Bled at approximately half hour intervals from any of these places. In case of emergency you may use the following phone numbers: (3861)-211-694 (T. Pisanski, up to June 24, 5pm), (3864)-77-316, fax: (3864)-77-267 (Hotel Jelovica after that).

Climate

The average daily temperatures at Lake Bled in late June are about 21C (70F). The temperatures in the mountains, of course, tend to be a few degrees cooler. We suggest you have along a sweater if you wish to join the excursion. Chances for rain are small but not negligible.

Note

You have probably heard about occassional unrests in the southern part of Yugoslavia. So far the situation in Slovenia is absolutely normal and we do not expect any problems in the future.
