FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: NSERC: Strategic Project Grants (SPG) competition (SFU internal deadline: 8 APR 2010; NSERC's deadline: 15 APR 2010)

The Office of Research Services (ORS) has recently obtained the following information which we are forwarding to list members.

Please note that all applications/proposals/letters of intent must be approved by Research Services using an SFU Research Funding Application Signature Sheet prior to their submission. This form can be found on the web at http://www.sfu.ca/ors/sig.html and must accompany a copy of any paper application for ORS records when seeking University approval. Applicants are strongly advised to allow sufficient lead-time for the proper consideration at each level.

AGENCY:  Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
PROGRAM:  Strategic Project Grants (SPG)
TYPE:  Application (paper or eSubmission.  See Important Note below for eSubmisison to NSERC)
DEADLINES: 
i) SFU Internal deadline:  8 APR 2010, and
ii) NSERC deadline:  15 APR 2010

POTENTIAL FUNDING:  100 - 125 new projects ($140K/year) are funded in each competition

This message is in follow-up to the SFU/NSERC teleconference which was sponsored by the Dean, Faculty of Applied Sciences, on 3 MAR 2010.

IMPORTANT NOTES

No cash is required from the partner; only in-kind contributions are required.  However, if the partner wishes to provide "cash" in support of the application, SFU requires overhead (or indirect costs).  Thus, a separate SFU Funding Application Signature Sheet(s), with overhead calculated at a rate appropriate to the anticipated funding arrangement.  The separate SFU Signature Sheet(s) for the partner component(s) should be attached to the main SFU Signature Sheet that displays the funding requested from NSERC.  The rate used to calculate overhead (or indirect costs) should be confirmed in advance with Elaine Walton, Research Contracts Administrator, Office of Research Services; Elaine_Walton@sfu.ca, local 26684.  


 

 WHAT DOES ORS REQUIRE BY THE SFU INTERNAL DEADLINE DATE OF 8 APR 2010 (or sooner)?

* Principal Investigator (PI) and SFU co-PIs must all sign the SFU SIG Sheet and obtain the signatures of their Chairs and Deans (or Dean's designate).  Co-applicants in different departments must use a separate SFU SIG Sheet and also obtain the signatures of their Chairs and Deans or Dean's designate.  Send all SFU SIG Sheets to: ors@sfu.ca;

and

* the electronic NSERC application should be in the "submit" mode no later than 9:00 am on 9 APR 2010; eSubmission to NSERC begins after this time on 9 APR 2010.

NOTE:  SFU faculty members who wish to submit a paper application are responsibility for sending the paper application package to NSERC (Ottawa).  NSERC's receipt deadline is before 4 pm on 15 APR 2010.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROGRAMME

A Strategic Project Grant is for early stage research and development (R&D).  The objective is to increase research & training in the 7 targeted areas that could strongly influence Canada's economy, society and/or environment within the next 10 years.

 

REQUIREMENTS, The project must

* Fall within 1 of the 7 target areas; thus, be focused research;

* Have well-defined objectives, scope, milestones and duration (1 to 3 years);

* Have one or more supporting organizations that is actively involved in all stages of the project and can apply the results.

 

7 TARGETED AREAS (are Canada's national priority areas)

* Advanced communications and management of information;

* Biomedical technologies;

* Competitive manufacturing;

* Healthy environment & ecosystems;

* Quality foods and novel byproducts

* Safety and security;

* Sustainable energy systems.

NOTE:  Research outside the 7 priority target areas will not be considered by NSERC for funding.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA (all are EQUALLY weighted)

* Originality of the research;

* Quality of the research;

* Project work plan;

* Quality of the applicants as researchers;

* Training potential;

* Interactions with the supporting organizations;

* Benefits to Canada and the supporting organizations.

NOTE:  Each criterion is graded from 1 (lowest score) to 4 (highest score).  Thus, aim for a 3 to 4 for each criteria.

 

WHAT'S NEW FROM NSERC FOR 2010

* New Policy on Intellectual Property (see "Instructions" web site for the link);

* Project Management Costs -- costs for project management salary (of an HQP), training or software will now be eligible.  The level of funding will be up to 10% of the total cash contributions to the project, from all sources.

* Last competition with current Target Areas -- target areas change every 5 years.
