This course is an introduction to the history of Europe from the religious divisions caused by the Reformation in the sixteenth century to the important political and social changes that have occurred since the end of the Cold War. Since our period of study spans five centuries, we will confine ourselves to a survey of the most important aspects of the political and social history of Europe. Students will be expected to acquire a good, factual grasp of the main themes of early modern and modern European history and to analyze the required readings in tutorial discussions and in written assignments.
Viewing the French Revolution of 1789 as a crucial historical event that ushered in the modern era, the course emphasizes the differences in political and social organization between the pre-revolutionary or early modern period and European modernity. Consequently, we will focus on the ideas and ideologies that illustrate these differences, e.g. absolutism, liberalism, socialism, nationalism. The required readings will help us see to what extent Europeans accepted and challenged their political and social structures.
