Hughes, Chapter 6
I wish Hughes had done a better job of integrating his thematic approach with a straightforward chronology. Readers must jump back and forth between different periods in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Hughes outlines three characteristics of post-1648 Germany. You should be familiar with these. Above all, you should know what dualism is. In addition, carefully pursue the theme of imperial reaction.
Other terms with which you should be familiar include: League of Augsburg, War of Spanish Succession, Peace of Carlowitz, Peace of Passarowitz, Pietism, Palatinate crisis, Great Northern War. Pay attention to the fortunes of the Wittelsbachs.
