Hughes, Chapter 6

I wish Hughes had done a better job of integrating his thematic approach with a straightforward chronology. Readers must jump back and forth between different periods in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Hughes outlines three characteristics of post-1648 Germany. You should be familiar with these. Above all, you should know what dualism is. In addition, carefully pursue the theme of imperial reaction.

Other terms with which you should be familiar include: League of Augsburg, War of Spanish Succession, Peace of Carlowitz, Peace of Passarowitz, Pietism, Palatinate crisis, Great Northern War. Pay attention to the fortunes of the Wittelsbachs.

1. In three or four sentences, identify and explain the historical significance of

  • Pragmatic Sanction = Rebecca Robinson

    Type your answer. Think in terms of the larger themes of Chapter 6. Consider information avaialable in the chapter, but look elsewhere too. Use authoritative printed sources, not internet sources, and list these in correct bibliographical format.

    2. Hughes writes of the "tendency to write off the imperial constituion as no more than the codification of weakness" (p. 116). Does he agree with this view? Why or why not? Refer to two early modern events / developments to make your case. Answer in essay form, one to two typed pages.
