This assignment is due in class on 14 October. Its principal purpose is to lay a solid foundation for your research paper. The prospectus consists of two parts: (1) a research proposal, i.e. a statement of the question that you propose to investigate in your research paper, and (2) a preliminary bibliography for your research paper. The prospectus should be typed. You will be evaluated on the quality of your proposal and of your bibliography. Your research proposal may be two double-spaced pages in length but should be no longer than this. Make sure that you clearly state the central question of your paper. If you have a tentative answer/thesis, indicate what it is. Explain the significance of your question and suggest the sort of evidence and the approaches you will use in answering it. Your bibliography should demonstrate that you have sufficient primary and/or secondary sources at your disposal to justify writing a paper on your topic. You should consult scholarly books and journal articles that deal with your specific topic or with aspects related to your topic. Avoid encyclopedia articles and out-of-date popular books.
I expect to meet at least once with every student over the course of the semester to discuss the progress of your research paper. Do not hesitate to see me during my office hours or during the allocated class times for discussion of research papers. If these times are not convenient, please make an appointment to see me at another time.
